I believe the best first step is gauging the students knowledge and working through their ideas on the topic together, then guiding the student to better understanding using questions to get them to think about the topic in different ways. Often students can find the way that a course has been explained confusing and this can get in the way of their confidence - often all that is required is a new set of eyes!
