About Willem
I am attending the University of Sydney to pursue a law degree in February 2026. I hold a Master of Arts in Political Studies, with a specialization in Political and Legal Thought, from Queen's University, where I also completed a Bachelor of Arts (Honors) degree, majoring in History and minoring in Political Studies. I have immense experience as a tutor. As a teaching assistant, I taught and clarified classroom concepts to approximately 60 students in years 2 through 4. I also worked to improve each student's writing, whether it be for a weekly homework assignment (1-2 pages) or a term paper (20 pages), so they could achieve their desired grade. Additionally, I taught grade 9 geography during online schooling and served as a peer tutor for grades 9-12 drama. Some of my favorite things to do are reading, hiking, running, cycling, and drinking lots of coffee. I am excited to meet you and get started!

My teaching philosophy emphasizes the use of dialogue and interaction as the primary means of instruction. Through active learning, I encourage students to ask and respond to questions. Through meaningful discussions, students develop a deeper understanding of the subject material and refine their oral skills simultaneously. I aim to foster self-confidence in formulating one's thoughts, ideas, and opinions, as well as critical thinking skills to assess and evaluate arguments.
University writing is not taught; rather, professors expect you to possess the skills necessary for success. Upon reflection, I credit much of my success in university to the professor who marked my first essay. My professor gave me a wake-up call when I received the marked paper, covered in red scribbles, with entire portions crossed out and question marks everywhere. I aim to help students avoid the same mistakes in their writing that I once made, so that they can feel proud of the work they produce and the mark they receive. I work with students to develop their entire writing process, including brainstorming, research, structure, thesis and argument creation, editing, and citations.
Education should be accessible.
