I teach and tutor mathematics (arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus 1, calculus 2, calculus 3, ,linear algebra, and physics at honors and AP levels at middle school, high school and college levels. My tutoring starts by discovering learning habits of student (pedagogical aspects) and uncovering knowledge gaps in subject matter (curricular aspects). Typical lesson (remedial or forward looking students) is prepared in sync with material covered by student's teacher. In preparation for tutoring class, copy of current work is requested, analyzed and appropriate content is created and reinforced by assignments. I resist providing answers to homework problems without making sure student understands the concepts and processes. I believe to help students to discover for themselves. I consider tutoring a long term commitment based on trust among student, family and myself.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

In my freshman year in college, I responded to an ad to help a middle school class in an underprivileged school. After a brief interview I was assigned to a 7th grade science class. What I learned in my first day was a lifetime lesson for me. You cannot teach if you don’t master your subject and if you don’t know our audience. I studied fundamentals of teaching and I made sure to be ready on the subject matter. I entered a world of learning and teaching that had no exit.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

Physics and mathematics are the core subjects I teach. I like to discuss some appropriate historic and philosophic backgrounds of the fields with the hope of expanding the horizons and learning about my students.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My senior year in high school, my physics teacher instilled in me a deep curiosity and the need for competence and humanity.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

The qualities to be a good tutor are Subject matter knowledge, ability to teach to where the student is in their journey, and to be mindful of family’s goals and needs.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I recall as a graduate student in theoretical physics, at the end of a class where a new concept was presented, our professor asked if there are any questions. A classmate commented that everything looks so easy in the class till I go home and start to study it. This was a great lesson in the difficulty of truly grasping complex subjects on one’s own and thee benefit of guidance and patience.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

My main challenge in tutoring is flexibility in method and technique. I want to convince the students without stepping on toes of their teacher.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

In tutoring, my passion is continuously learning through teaching and teaching through that learning. Beyond that, I find the relationship of physics and mathematics the most fascinating.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P)?

Patience with young minds, accountability and trust.
