I’m very friendly and approachable, and am always able to find a personal connection; both between the student and myself, and between the student and the topic. I believe this is key for creating an engaging learning environment at any level, but I remain focused on the goals we have set for the lesson.
The first thing I’m interested in are these goals. What you most want to get out of a single lesson, and then from series of lessons? That could be anything from improving test performance, to developing an intuitive understanding of applied Bayesian reasoning.
I start with the current topic to determine what background knowledge is necessary, what different ways it can be explained, and how the curriculum approaches it. If I think there are gaps that need to be filled then I start with those so as not to waste time.
Given a set of questions I prompt the student to see if a particular method comes naturally, compare that with how it is explained in the curriculum, and see if an alternative route to understanding is needed.
I practice spaced repetition, which means we may move on before the student has fully understood or practised a type of question. Moving between problems and topics like this develops flexibility in problem solving, and makes clear to me which concepts are and aren’t making sense.
