Mathematics at school is a marriage of skill (to answer questions) and knowledge (to understand WHY the answer is right), and my approach as a tutor reflects this: A tutor and student should work through problems together, the tutor corrects misunderstandings as they come up, and sets written work to build skill.
A student may be having difficulty in mathematics because:
a) They had a key misunderstanding earlier on.
Maths builds upon itself, so a misunderstanding can compound until a student is totally lost. In this case it is my job to work backwards with the student until we find the problem and correct it.
b) When introduced to a new concept, they are overwhelmed by new terminology and complicated sounding explanations.
This happens to the best of us, and in this case I believe the correct approach is to break the concept down into easily digestible logical steps (the beauty of mathematics is that this can always be done!), then give the student the time and the space and the guidance to understand each step and put it together.
