About Callum
I am a folk singer-songwriter based in Montréal, Quebec, and have just finished recording my debut E.P. at Hotel2Tango! I have a deep love for fingerstyle guitar, especially the styles of the American south; these were the styles and songs which originally inspired and compelled me to play guitar (The first time I heard John Hurt, I could hardly believe it was just him playing!) It brings me such joy to watch students learn these styles--although they are taught infrequently nowadays, they are the foundations on which so much of our favourite music is built on.

I can teach both beginner and intermediate fingerstyle guitar. I specialize in finger-picked blues styles from the American south, including Piedmont, Delta, and Texas blues, (think the likes of Elizabeth Cotten, Mississippi John Hurt and Lightnin' Hopkins) but am also very comfortable with the folk styles of 60s Revival (Dylan, Dave Van Ronk, Paul Simon), and the country Travis picking of Merle Travis, Chet Atkins, and Townes Van Zandt!
The secret to all these styles is finger / thumb independence. Much like the left and right hands on a piano, the goal is to be able to play an independent melody with your fingers, while still maintaining a thumping blues bass-line with your thumb. It is a lot of fun, once you get it!
In my lessons, although we will look at tablature, we will try not to learn songs just by rote and brute force. Rather, we will try to conceptualize them as a melody-line on top of a bass-line. Although this might seem harder at first, once you have it it makes any fingerstyle much easier to learn. You will start to see patterns in how these songs are put together, as well as learn a variety of open chord voicings often used in fingerstyle playing. If you are interested, I can even teach fingerstyle improvisation!
I am always happy to adjust a lesson to fit your specific needs. Whether you are just starting to play guitar, or are looking to learn a new style, I look forward to helping!
