MSci Physics student graduating summer 2017 looking for part-time tuition over the summer.
I've been supporting the GeneratingGenius tuition program for underprivileged children as Physics/Chemistry A-Level and GCSE tutor.
I am a calm and approachable and have helped both shy and excitable students. As I understand, keeping students attentive does not involve a general approach, but requires a two-way dialogue where understanding a students chain of thought is equally important. When things go wrong, I try my best to question them on where they think the problem lies and then show them how I would work to resolve it.
This way, I aim to improve intuition on how to deal with classes of problems. Within the framework of exams, I will categorize what the student will need to know before taking the exam, what the student is expected to understand from a question and what the student is expected to do to complete the question.
Practice is essential in developing all these areas, so working through exam questions is a core method in analysing exam questions and practicing giving solutions. Where there are gaps in knowledge and understanding, I use standard textbooks/revision guides and online resources combined with a grilling of what the student themselves know about the topic followed by a guided solution followed by an unguided attempt later on.
I first started out by tutoring in GCSE Maths and sciences for children of my parents friends at 16. This stopped at university, however I decided to apply for a volunteer tutor position for gifted and underprivileged students under the GeneratingGenius program this year. Here, I developed a more mature approach to teaching and have helped 2 students with GCSE Double Science, 1 student with GCSE Triple Science and 1 student with A-level Chemistry. Here, I worked in small groups as well as providing 1 to 1 tuition. I received very positive feedback during the course of this program from my students, with one of them achieving an A from D throughout the term in school interim exams. The other students were already quite capable and I hope that I have helped them achieve the As they desired in this years exam season.
Depending on the conditions of travel (i.e. If it takes more than 30 minutes door to door) I may have to charge for travel costs. Otherwise, feel free to message me if you would like to negotiate costs! I am willing to be flexible with travel and costs as long as I like the student!
