About Gavin
Hi, I’m Gavin! At my core, I’m a storyteller and a bit of a nerd. I love asking “what if?” and imagining “what could be.” What that means for you as a student is that I bring curiosity, creativity, and a genuine passion for helping others grow as writers. I know creative writing can feel intimidating because it’s so subjective, but I see that as an opportunity: together, we’ll focus on what makes stories work, memorable characters, strong worlds, and emotional resonance. Students often tell me they appreciate that I’m both encouraging and direct. I’ll celebrate what’s working in your writing while giving clear, actionable feedback on what isn’t. I don’t believe in sugarcoating, but I do believe in building you up so you leave each lesson feeling more confident than when you started. I adapt my approach to your strengths, weaknesses, and goals—whether you’re a student tackling assignments, an aspiring novelist, or someone writing purely for joy. And because I embrace modern tools like AI, I can also help you learn how to use them without losing your unique voice. Above all, I want you to know: your stories matter, and I’m here to help you tell them in a way that connects with readers and leaves a lasting impression.

Creative writing is one of the most open and exciting forms of expression—but that also makes it one of the hardest to navigate. Unlike other subjects, there isn’t always a clear “right” or “wrong,” yet there are core techniques that separate good writing from great writing. My teaching focuses on these essentials: creating compelling characters, building strong story structures, and using tension to keep readers hooked.
A typical lesson begins with reviewing your own work, be it a class assignment, a short story, or a draft of your novel. From there, we’ll focus on your specific strengths and weaknesses, whether that means refining dialogue, deepening worldbuilding, or sharpening your plot. Lessons can then move into new concepts, writing exercises, or extended discussions about your work.
What sets me apart as a tutor is twofold: my direct and honest feedback and my openness to modern tools. I don’t sugarcoat, because if you don’t improve, I haven’t done my job. And I leverage resources like AI to highlight both its potential and its limits, teaching you how to use it responsibly without losing your unique human voice.
