About Jake
I came from a state comprehensive school to graduate from Oxford with a degree in History and from UCL with a Masters in Medieval and Renaissance Studies. I am enthusiastic and love to teach, and have benefited enormously from the kind teachers I've had over the years. I aim to repay that kindness by teaching others, and by encouraging curiosity and a love for thinking as my teachers inspired in me. I take teaching seriously and want to get to know each individual student to give the precise teaching you want and need, and to help you grow as a student and a thinker.

I teach at the level of each individual student, encouraging curiosity and helping connect the dots of things you've learnt in class. A typical lesson is an hour long, and involves a brief discussion of recent classwork, before moving onto a more big-picture look at the subject. For students needing extra help, that tends to involve asking questions to encourage you to understand not just what you're supposed to learn, but why it works. For students looking to go beyond their school teaching, it's often reading an article or discussing a theoretical concept which relates to the subject, and developing your critical thinking skills by discussing the pros and cons of the work of other scholars. I've earned a Silver Diploma from the Schools, Students and Teachers Network for teaching vulnerable pupils during the pandemic. I'm also a rowing coach, so am very used to a range of teaching styles. I aim my teaching at GCSE or A Level students.
Review

Perfect! Jake tutored our daughter, Issy, in preparation for her GCSE History as it was one of her weaker subjects. It has made a big difference to her confidence and, while we are still awaiting results, it appears to have helped as she was much more comfortable with the content. Jake is incredibly professional, reliable and patient, and clearly has a deep knowledge of his subject matter. The time he spent going through sample questions and topics was invaluable, excellent value for money and highly recommended!
- Cliodhna's daughter Issy is friendly, polite and easy to teach. Very down-to-earth and sensible, with a good idea of what she needs to do to improve.Jake's response :
