About Wu

I am currently an undergraduate at the University of Oxford studying Earth Sciences. Having completed my A-Levels relatively recently, I understand both the academic pressure students face and the practical strategies required to succeed. Studying at Oxford has strengthened not only my subject knowledge, but also my ability to think critically, explain complex ideas clearly, and approach problems with logical structure.

I am bilingual in Mandarin and English, and speak English with near-native fluency and clear pronunciation. I achieved an IELTS score of 8.5 prior to beginning my studies at Oxford. This allows me to teach confidently in English while also supporting Mandarin-speaking students who may occasionally benefit from clarification in their native language.

My interest in tutoring began during high school, when I noticed that some teaching focused heavily on exam practice without fully explaining the logic behind key principles. While this approach can improve exam performance, it can sometimes leave students confused or disengaged. I believe that the true purpose of learning is to develop understanding and curiosity about the world, with exams simply serving as a form of assessment. For this reason, I aim to help students build genuine understanding while also mastering the exam techniques needed to achieve top results. My goal is for students to learn with confidence, clarity, and even enjoyment.

My approach to tutoring is focused on building deep understanding first, and then sharpening exam technique. As an Earth Sciences student at Oxford, I’m used to thinking across subjects — linking maths to physics, geography to real-world systems, and theory to application. I try to help students see the bigger picture rather than memorising isolated facts. Once the concepts are secure, we work carefully on exam-style questions, mark schemes, and time management to make sure that understanding translates into top grades.

A typical lesson lasts one hour. Usually we begin by reviewing previous material and identifying any weak areas. We then work through new content interactively — I ask questions throughout to check understanding and encourage students to explain ideas back to me. In the second half of the lesson, we apply the material to structured exam questions, focusing on technique, clarity, and avoiding common mistakes. I also set optional practice between sessions for students who want to progress more quickly. But of course, I am always happy to make changes when students feel like they need additional help with something else in a particular lesson.

In terms of experience, I have worked at a summer camp supporting Oxbridge admissions preparation, where I helped students refine personal statements and practise interview technique.

My lessons are aimed at GCSE and A-Level students, typically aged 14–18, who want to strengthen their understanding, improve predicted grades, or prepare for competitive university applications. Whether a student is aiming to move up a grade boundary or achieve top marks, I tailor lessons to their specific goals and starting point.
