I believe firmly in lessons based around active learning as both maths and chemistry are hands on subjects. This revolves around introducing a concept, a worked example and then working through plenty of questions exploring a variety of applications of the concept.
I am studying physics at Oxford University (entry 2015) and received a Distinction in the first year and a First Class in the second year. I started from a small village in Greece and got into university by teaching myself physics and maths because I could not afford otherwise. Eventually, I scored high in the PAT (physics aptitude test) and the Oxford interviews.
The structure of my sessions obviously depends very much on what the student wishes to achieve, if it’s topic specific then I will prepare individual lessons centred around first and foremost the specification for the subject and its specific exam board – with a brief overview, followed by an in-depth look at the topic and ending with a brief quiz and then some questions set for consolidation.
My teaching method is to encourage the students to discover Maths for themselves, thus re-creating in the classroom the role of a professional mathematician. I prefer this approach over instructional methods as I believe that students will retain knowledge discovered for themselves for longer than information that they have been told by someone else.
