My teaching methodology is extremely flexible, depending on the students learning style.
In these sessions, we will review A level content chosen by you, and work through exam style questions together. I will set questions at the end of each session for you to complete before the next one, where we will discuss them and I will provide solutions.
Of course, if you have a preference for doing things differently (e.g. if you just want to cover exam questions, or cover specefic points from multiple areas of the syllabus) that is perfectly fine too!
I am available throughout the summer for catch up classes, for students (for example, those moving from year 12 to year 13) who feel they have missed out this academic year due to COVID-19.
Robert is one of our best tutors. They have a high-quality profile, verified qualifications, a quick response time, and great reviews from students!
Hi! I'm Rob, and I'm a Theoretical Physics PhD student at the University of Sussex.
I hold a Bachelors degree in Physics, and a Masters degree in Theoretical Physics both from the University of Oxford.
I have spent time at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), working in a plasma physics lab on a diagnostic to measure ion and neutral flows in the Plasma Krystal-4 (PK-4) experiment on the International Space Station.
Also at Caltech, I have worked in the Department of Mathematics on a High Energy Physics Theory project in the AdS/CFT correspondence.
I have extensive experience teaching students (mostly) between the ages of 6 and 18. Ranging from Gifted and Talented primary school tuition, to A Level & Oxford Physics admissions preparation, to mature students looking to get back into education.
Learning more about the Universe every day is what get's me up in the morning! Being able to share the wonders of science and maths with others is really the cherry ontop!
PhD, Theoretical Physics: September 2020 - Present
Focuses: Early Universe Cosmology, Particle Physics.
MMathPhys, Mathematical and Theoretical Physics: October 2019 - June 2020
Focuses: Cosmology, Theoretical Particle Physics.
BA, Physics: October 2016 - June 2019
Focuses: Classical Physics, Quantum Mechanics, General Relativity, Particle Physics, Astrophysics.
Volunteer A Level Physics & Maths Tutor - Open Tutoring UK: August 2020 - October 2020
Tutoring students via Zoom in preparation for Autumn A Level resits on a voluntary basis, in response to disruption to education caused by Covid-19. Typically students decide which past papers they want to go through ahead of time, and I walk them through my solutions by sharing my tablet screen as a whiteboard.
KS2 Gifted and Talented Tutor - Self Employed: July 2020 - Present
Designing enrichment activities for gifted and talented KS2 students, to encourage engagement with STEM at an early age. These sessions are centred around the core themes of curiosity and understanding, to give students an appreciation of the joy of scientific discovery. Titles of the sessions I have run include: ’Our Address in Space’, ’Exploring the Galaxy’, and ’What is the Universe made of?’.
Outreach Ambassador - University College, Oxford: October 2017 - June 2020
Delivering outreach talks to students in year groups 8 - 13. Topics ranging from general university applications to subject specific physics academic tasters.
A Level Physics & Maths Tutor - Self Employed: March 2017 - Present
Tutoring A Level Physics and Maths students in preparation for their examinations. Preparing handouts & notes covering course material, setting relevant exam style questions, providing feedback and solutions to practice questions. I have tutored the AQA and Edexcel Physics courses, and the Edexcel Maths & Further Maths courses.
Volunteer Physics Teacher - The King Edmund School: June 2015 - Present
Teaching a number of year 12 physics lessons after end of year assessments, designed to be an accessible introduction to some university level content. Topics covered have included: ’Special Relativity’, ’Mathematics for Physicists’, ’Astrophysics’, ’Stellar Astrophysics’, ’Particle Physics’. I decided the content to be covered, prepared the lessons, and designed handouts for the students.
Perfect! Robert is very friendly, patient and accommodating. He listens extremely well and gives pertinent advice and explains methods clearly. I highly recommend Robert as a tutor.
I cannot express my immense gratitude at having found Robert. He exhibits a patient, munificent and erudite approach toward tutoring, and truly it would seem that nothing is too much trouble to ask. He is very diligent when listening to areas I struggled with or showed difficulty toward. However, his concise and clear explanations have made these more complicated topics some of my favourite areas of study within physics and mathematics, for example when approaching problems concerning electrostatics or simple harmonic motion. Furthermore, Rob was a remarkable help when preparing for the PAT test in addition to other assessments in physics and mathematics for my A-Levels. Through his help and support I was able to secure offers to study physics at a myriad of leading universities and even achieved an A* in both my Physics and Mathematics A-Levels. I honestly would have been lost without his guidance. I have had lessons with several physics tutors who truly do not compare. I can candidly claim that Robert’s method of teaching is exemplary in that you not only understand the material covered at the time, but continue to do so long after and then are able to apply it to a diverse range of other scenarios. His passion and enthusiasm for the subject are unrivalled which is evident in his incredible breadth of knowledge that is transferred directly to his teaching. Following our lessons my fascination for physics was enormously expanded and inspired me to approach more challenging problems independently. I cannot recommend him highly enough!
Rob is so passionate and enthusiastic about physics, it’s so inspiring. He’d often give presentations at the school I went to, and they’d always leave me with a new understanding of the topics, and craving more and more knowledge! He makes an excellent tutor, who is very thorough and genuine. It is clear that he has time for you, and wants to help you further your knowledge. Very highly recommended.
I am so glad that I met Robert! He is honestly an amazing tutor who breaks complicated topics and questions apart and then teaches them from first principles. His patient and meticulous approach to tutoring me has been extremely helpful in helping me through the October A-level exams which I done with less than two months of revision. His extensive knowledge and passion for maths and physics make him an excellent and motivated tutor. I would highly, highly recommend him.
Robert is a fantastic tutor an excellent scholar. His extensive knowledge in physics and mathematics allows him to explain even the most advanced concept with ease.
Robert first tutored me around three years ago, helping me with A level physics. I would argue that he is a large part for the reason I achieved the grade I did; mainly due to his encouraging words and seamless explanations of complex physical phenomena.
The perfect tutor, Robert would be an excellent fit for any aspiring scientist.
Rob is a fantastic tutor who effectively identifies areas of the subject that need work. He is able to explain things from a foundation level and build to more complex ideas with ease, his method of teaching is very efficient and memorable.
Robert is a genuine person that cared about my education.
He was enthusiastic about physics and consistently provided heaps of useful and easy to understand examples, he also always made sure I had plenty of practice questions. His ability to teach is incredible, we went through topics very thoroughly and in depth.
An outstanding tutor that I definitely recommend.
Robert tutored me when I sat and passed the Oxford physics aptitude test (PAT). I bought Robert many very difficult problems I was stuck on during this time and there was not a single one that he was not able to answer. He would often also look to explain things in accessible and logical ways that strongly improved understanding. He also has a wealthy bank of interesting and insightful challenge problems to offer, combining both maths and physics in very satisfying and unexpected ways.
