About Pierrette
I have a degree in history and a minor in psychology, from the Royal Military College of Canada. While all history fascinates me, I have specifically studied military, European and Canadian history, with a particular interest in the First and Second World Wars, the interwar period, and the Holocaust. I have a profound interest in medieval and ancient history; my undergraduate thesis was on the status of the medieval peasant family in what is now France in the late Middle Ages.
I am a qualified teacher, with a B. Ed degree from Wilfrid Laurier University. I taught at a private school for 4 years, where I also ran a very successful current events/history club for grade 6/7/8 students.
I am a voracious reader, who reads mostly non-fiction. I am very well travelled, and have lived in most provinces, as well as in England, where I volunteered as a guide/interpreter at the medieval Lincoln Castle (home of a copy of the Magna Carta). Finally, I am a retired military officer. During my career, I experienced history first hand, from the end of the Cold War to the events of 9/11.

I am passionate about everything related to history and love nothing more than to share that passion with others. Too often, students say that they don’t like history; I feel very strongly that this is because of the way it is often taught. No one enjoys memorizing and regurgitating seemingly irrelevant facts, only to forget them the second a test is done.
I believe that by making history fun, and by relating it to a student’s own experience of the world, it is much more likely that the student will retain the information learned. As such, open and rich discussions based on the student’s existing knowledge, lived experience and starting interest level are at the centre of my teaching practice. I love learning from students as well, and these exchanges allow me to do just that.
I like to use all sorts of resources in my teaching, including videos, music, cartoons, comic strips, news articles, etc. For example, I have used the Dr Seuss book “Yertle the Turtle” in a class about inequalities.
I can teach or tutor students at all elementary and secondary levels, in French and in English.

Perfect! We’ve had the pleasure of working with Pierrette for both my teenage son and elementary-age daughter, and the results have been exceptional. Pierrette makes current affairs and history come alive in ways that engage both of them, tailoring lessons to their unique needs and interests. My son has developed a deeper understanding of complex topics, while my daughter is excited about learning about the world generally and history, something I never thought possible at her age! Highly recommend!
- It was a pleasure working with Jeff and his children. They are engaged, interested and keen to learn and participate. They are comfortable engaging in discussions and using their critical thinking skills to see beyond what they already know to infer further information and topics of discussion. I am happy to recommend them to any tutor looking to work with pre-teens and teens.Pierrette's response :
