About Kat
A little about me...
Hello! My name is Kat, and I am a mallet percussionist myself with seven years of experience as a percussionist, three as a performer, and three as a paraprofessional instructor.
I have a degree in education, and my goal as a teacher is to, well, to teach! That and inspire you, the student to grow not only as a performer, but as a person as well.
I believe that growth is the #1 reason we practice, and I don't mean just tangible growth like you play Green scales better or your technique had improved. No, belief as a teacher is that ALL growth is positive, whether that is gaining a good work ethic, making new connections, learning a piece you've always wanted to learn, becoming more confident and comfortable in your own skin, or improving those tangible skills.
My philosophy as a teacher is that you, the student, are the focus, and your growth and well-being is most important--not my lesson plans or my schedule, but you. My job, as your teacher, is to learn, grow, and adapt to your needs so that you can grow and flourish into the musician you want to become.
Every person is different: I started my musical journey casually, began performing competitively, and then went back to casual performance. I was a late bloomer in music, but I learned quickly and dedicated a lot of time to the arts because I was performing competitively. You may be different, coming from a background where you want to learn more casually for yourself or you have experience with a different instrument; perhaps you don't have good hand-eye coordination yet or don't quite understand rhythm or reading sheet music. That's okay, I've been there too! What matters is that you're willing to put yourself out there, try, and learn, and I would love to help!
My passion in life is teaching and inspiring while having fun, so if you're ready to take the first steps, I'd be happy to walk the path with you!

Hello to all the wonderful artists, performers, and people who may be taking their first steps into the wonderful world of music with mallet percussion!
Whether you're brand new to the world of music or an intermediate musician, I always tailor my lessons and practices to the skill level of my students. I believe that small wins are big wins, and that progress of any kind should be celebrated.
In lessons, I like to focus on basics, foundational work, the piece you're learning, performance quality, but also fun and games.
A typical lesson would look like...
• A check-in to discuss what we want to work on during the lesson
• Opening with warm ups, stamina-building exercises, and foundational work
• Working on the primary piece of music
• Closing with constructive critique and a plan for the next lesson
I incorporate fun, games, rewards, and constructive criticism into my lessons because I believe that progress should be rewarded, and that mistakes are the first steps in learning and growing.
As a teacher I've found that my history as a "late bloomer" in music sets me apart from other instructors. I started my musical journey years after many of my peers of the same age, but this gave me perspective on practice, patience, dedication, and progress. I believe music is a beautiful art and age and experience shouldn't stop anyone from pursuing such an expressive and beautiful part of life.
I have experience primarily with teenage students who practice in marching band style performance, but I can also teach adults and children alike.
I look forward to learning and growing with you all and expanding the world of music and art.
