About Ammar

Hi! I'm Ammar, a passionate and systematic Biology student. As a Year 13, I was the top performing Biology student in a huge cohort at Wellington College, sitting all 3 externals in 3 hours, and obtaining perfect scores in 2 of them.

This was key to achieving my goal of getting a 99.90 ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) Equivalent, placing in the top 0.1% of students in New Zealand. I also achieved 6 NZQA Scholarships in my Year 13.

To accomplish this without sacrificing my other exams, I had to be very smart with my preparation, and thus developed strategies targeted to NCEA Biology which have since worked wonders for securing excellence grades for both experienced and struggling Biology students. I hope to share these strategies with you and lift your grades to that same level.

NCEA Level 3 Biology is notorious for the difficulty of its exams, which means a PhD in Biology won't help you get excellence - but preparation tailored to NCEA Level 3 Biology exams will.

With a structured plan and a good exam strategy, we will work together to overcome the time pressure and open-ended nature of L3 Bio exams, securing the best grades possible.

This preparation has two stages:

1) A mastery of the content
Reviewing *everything* in the standard, then mindmapping the pool of content to make sure you understand which sections to link in the exam.
We'll move through the different grade levels step-by-step, because excellence answers in L3 Bio require you to build up from the achieved-level definitions. This means we'll distill each concept to a solid definition which highlights the key M and E points we'll cover later. We then ensure we understand *how* the process for that concept works (e.g. how is a stimulus detected in a plant, and how does it grow towards it, in a tropism). Lastly (and most importantly), we'll thoroughly examine all of the costs and benefits to the species of each response/pattern, and seeing how these weigh up - most students don't do enough of this in advance to get Excellence.

2) A mastery of the exams
We'll do plenty of practice questions and practice papers, but with a different approach to other STEM subjects. From experience, the best way to reach a consistent excellence level answer in L3 Biology is to critique each answer against the marking schedule, against your notes, and then to condense it down as much as you possibly can, so that your writing is concise when under time pressure.
I'll also share with you my extensive past-paper analysis around which processes to include/exclude, which links the markers need, and how/how many of the bullet points you need to cover to get excellences while managing your time in the exam.

This strategy was the key to me being the top level 3 Biology student from a huge cohort of student at Wellington College, doing all 3 papers in 3 hours, and having *never* taken Biology before!
