About Brian
Hi!
I have a PhD, MS and BS in Environmental Economics from UC Berkeley. I have been tutoring math, stats and economics courses for 15+ years. I have also taught as a college professor at university, community college, and small, private liberal arts colleges.
I am currently getting a teaching license with endorsements in Advanced Math and Social Studies. I am thus gaining even more experience teaching up and down the secondary math and social studies curriculum.
To this point, I have the most experience tutoring (A) Algebra 2 to Multivariable Calculus, (B) Basic to Advanced Statistics, and (C) Intro to Advanced Micro/Macro-economics. I am gaining experience and familiarity with SAT and AP exam preparation.
I believe academic success is a product of many things, including good structured guidance, clear expectations, continuous opportunities to practice and apply understanding, and finally, confidence and conviction. As a tutor I view my job is to help cover any deficits in the aforementioned and most of all make the subject tractable and fun.

To me, tutoring is by far the most effective way to learn. More than half of the battle is gaining confidence and understanding how to read questions and what is being asked of you and this happens so much more organically in a dynamic, interactive learning environment.
My approach is both holistic and personalized -- tailored to meet the challenges facing the student. For mathematical content, for example, the aversion to math is itself as much of an obstacle as the struggle with the material. I meet everybody where they are, and build from there. Sometimes that just means a little moral support and confirmation going through the work; other times it can be more in-depth discussion of material and how it connects more broadly or even in some cases, motivational coaching.
I believe strongly in practice problems and walking through exercises to gain confidence and understand the process. This helps ground everything in pragmatic terms, but also allows for discussion of the content and how it all connects.
