PhD Graduate from Engineering faculty offering 1 on 1 tutorials in STEM subjects

Methodology

I have an extremely broad knowledge base in the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, maths and engineering. During my PhD I designed my own lab practicals which I subsequently taught and assessed, as well as teaching as assessing a course on scientific essay writing. Whilst working as an academic I have had to teach staff and students complex principles to facilitate cutting edge research which we were conducting.

I have no set teaching style. In my experience it is best to get stuck into a problem and then assess where the gaps in knowledge lie and address them accordingly. Typically this involves throwing students in the proverbial deep end and seeing exactly how they cope with solving a complex problem. From there I can see for myself which approach should be taken.

Experience

Graduated in 2011 with a 1st Class Honours degree in Chemical Engineering (MEng) from Imperial College London. Then pursued a PhD developing Biofuel Cells and Glucose Biosensors at the University of Bath (completed 2015). For the past 3 years I have been working as an academic based in the faculty of engineering at UCL.

EDUCATION

2011 – 2015 Development of Biosensors and Biofuel Cells for Medical Devices, PhD, University of Bath
The focus of my PhD was to develop a prototype biofuel cell which could derive power from glucose (blood sugar). This involved developing new biocompatible materials and eventually constructing millifluidic continuous flow enzymatic biofuel cells which were capable of generating enough power to power a pacemaker.
Key Responsibilities, Achievements and Acquired Technical Skills:
- Assisted setting up and consequently managing a new research lab as most senior PhD candidate in group
- Designing research projects and supervising their implementation by students and researchers
- Published several research papers in high impact journals as primary author (see overleaf)
- Presented research to a range of audiences at international conferences and public engagement events
- Extensive experience in morphological characterisation using SEM, and electrochemical techniques for characterisation and functionalisation including impedance, potentiometry and amperometry
2007 – 2011 Chemical Engineering, MEng with 1st Class Honours, Imperial College London
Research Project: Deriving high quality cellulose from acetobacter xylinum with continuous flow bioreactors
Key modules and Electives:
- Pharmaceutical Process Development - Reactor Design
- Separation Processes - Downstream Separation in Biotechnology
- Advanced Bioprocess Engineering - Modelling of Biological Systems
1999 – 2006 The Bishop’s Stortford High School, Herts, CM23 3LU, England
Advanced Extension Award: Chemistry (Merit)
A Levels: Mathematics (A), Biology (B), Chemistry (B), Physics (A)
GCSEs : Mathematics (A*), Biology (B), Chemistry (A), Physics (A), English (B), English Literature (B), French (A), Latin (B), History (A*), Information and Communication Technology (A), Art and Design (B), Design and Technology: Graphics (B)
