About Michael
Tutoring students is a delight to me - I wouldn't have done it for 35 years otherwise! My students have had many things to say about me over the years, some of them are even repeatable, but in the main they use words like "patient" "professional" "entertaining", "experienced" "respectful" "friendly", "approachable" and "enthusiastic". I might be self-aggrandising here, but I choose to believe these things, I do at least aspire to them. Having worked with students from non-traditional backgrounds, mature students, students with particular needs, and students from all over the world, I believe I have a non-judgemental attitude to teaching. I have skill in helping to develop students' own understanding of how to learn and progress. Students come to me with their own unique educational questions, issues, and concerns, and we work through them together.

My tutorials are relaxed and informal aimed at instilling confidence and understanding. I tend towards a scaffolded approach where students are encouraged to identify how far they can already go without my help.
I have taught for 35 years and have extensive academic skills and support experience. I hold a PhD from Durham and a PGCE from Greenwich and have held the position of Senior Educational Consultant for EdmissionUK. I have published books and articles, delivered conference papers and currently run a Philosophy podcast.
I am happy to provide tutorial sessions of 1 hour for any student from Foundation level up to and including PhD.
