About Zach
I recently completed my M.A. in Philosophy at the University of British Columbia, supported by the Canada Graduate Scholarships–Master’s Award (a $17,500 research grant) for work on structuralist approaches to mathematical ontology. My academic background is strongest in formal logic, philosophy of mathematics, and metaphysics, and I also teach and mentor in ethics, epistemology, and political philosophy. I earned my B.A. in Honors Philosophy (High Distinction) from UBC in 2021 and received several academic awards, including the James Ruggles Macdonell Memorial Scholarship. During my undergraduate studies, I also spent a semester in India studying classical Indian logic and metaphysics. For the past seven years, I’ve taught debate and philosophy professionally, coaching students to major successes in debate, Ethics Bowl, and Ethics Olympiad across North America, China, and beyond. My students have published work in journals such as JSR and IJHSR, earned numerous shortlists at the John Locke Essay Competition, won two gold medals in the Harvard International Review essay contest, and won national level International Philosophy Olympiad Essay competitions. I’m also the co-founder of Modus Ponens Institute, a private education company focused on philosophy and debate. Outside of teaching, I’m usually skiing, mountaineering, or reading science fiction.

I bring years of experience teaching philosophy in multiple settings, including as a teaching assistant, in classroom environments, and through private tutoring. I have worked with well over 100 philosophy students directly, and I have designed curriculum in ethics, political philosophy, and epistemology that has been taught to hundreds of students. I have also tutored dozens of university students in philosophy essay writing and formal logic courses.
My philosophy lessons are structured, discussion-based, and tailored to your goals. I combine close reading with clear explanation and active practice, so you not only understand the material but can also explain it, evaluate arguments, and apply ideas in essays and exams. Depending on your needs, we focus on concept mastery (getting the theories straight), argument skills (reconstructing and critiquing arguments), and writing skills (turning your understanding into clear, well-supported papers).
A typical lesson starts with a quick check-in on your course expectations, readings, and upcoming assignments. We then work through a key passage or problem area together, identifying the main claims, the structure of the argument, and the strongest objections. I will model how to take effective notes, how to translate dense philosophy into plain language without losing precision, and how to build your own position. If you are working on an essay, we will spend time on thesis formation, outlining, and strengthening reasoning, and I can provide asynchronous feedback on drafts between sessions.
Lessons are suitable for motivated high school students, undergraduates, and adult learners who want serious improvement in comprehension, argumentation, and writing.

I first hired Zach for help in a course on Formal Logic, and thanks to him I was able to gain a solid understanding of the core concepts and completely turn my grades around. Afterwards, I hired him for several other courses. I found throughout those courses that Zach is generally very knowledgeable, and on the rare occasions that he encounters an unfamiliar subject he is quite good at gaining an understanding of it in a short time.
I have been taking weekly philosophy/essay classes with Zach for the past few months, and he has been absolutely amazing. He always comes to classes on time, prepares thoroughly, and structures each class very effectively. His passion and love for the subject blends through every class, and I have also learned to enjoy philosophy/essay writing thanks to his dedication. You cannot ask for a better teacher/person than Zach and I am so grateful for everything he has done for me. Highly recommended for any student with interest in essay writing or philosophy.
Zach was super helpful in assisting me with formal logic. Wouldn’t have gotten my grade without him! Was very knowledgeable and flexible with scheduling.
Zach tutored me in a symbolic logic class and I wouldn’t have been able to do it without him! He was a very thorough and patient teacher and I highly recommend working with Zach if you are looking for some support in a philosophy class.
Passionate and knows very well about the subject he's talking about, and very helpful in my political theory work!
Zach is a very flexible, accommodating teacher with unique insight into approaching complex topics. He’s a pleasure to work with and understands what it takes to be a teacher.
