About Isaac
I began my university career a bad student. I know, it isn't something you should usually write as a tutor. I should probably talk about graduating with high distinction or winning scholarships and awards, the kind of things that make people think I'm brilliant. But those things don't matter as much as knowing that I accomplished them after nearly dropping out.
You see, in first-year I didn't know how to learn, and I barely passed as a result. I got a 14% on my first math test and I was even on academic probation! However, fast-forward a couple years, and I was able to make the Dean's list, tutor all the subjects I studied, win scholarships, and graduate with an A+ average!
You see, I believe being gifted isn't as important as working hard. After I realized that I wasn't gifted, I taught myself to learn in a way that required no talent. Instead, all it took was hard work and courage, things anyone can do!
And that is how I teach my classes. There's no talent required, only patience and effort. Math and logic are important, and they are also things that everyone can be good at, so long as they are willing to be brave, make mistakes, and persist until they succeed. If it could work for someone as hopeless as I used to be, it can certainly work for you!

I believe that learning takes place in four steps: exposure, errors, review, and understanding. That is why I set up my lessons to facilitate these steps.
First, I expose the new material to the student, giving thorough demonstrations and explaining all the steps. I show them exactly how that type of problem should be solved.
Next, I give the student those same types of problems to solve, allowing them the opportunity to tinker with the processes and to make mistakes. Mistakes, I believe, teach us the most.
This is because it is errors, once reviewed, that help us grow. If we have learned from our mistakes, then we can attempt the same type of problem again while avoiding were we went wrong last time. This is where the learning happens.
For once the student has made and understood their errors with one type of problem, and reviewed them properly, then they understand that type of problem. They are ready to build on that knowledge and attempt different problems, and the cycle of exposure, errors, review, and understanding can begin again.
In my years of tutoring, I have found that almost anyone can learn with this type of lesson plan, so long as they are patient and unafraid of mistakes. I have had great success with both adults and children, as well as people of varying education levels.
All in all, I believe students learn best in a structured environment that encourages making and learning from mistakes. If you agree, then I look forward to working with you!
