About Rana
With over 31 years of experience in academia and research, particularly in the fields of Epidemiology and Public Health. I am deeply committed to supporting students as they explore the science and practice of improving population health. Throughout my career, I’ve worked to connect evidence-based research with real-world impact. My goal is to create a learning environment that is engaging, respectful, and intellectually challenging, where students feel supported and empowered to succeed.

My tutoring is primarily designed for undergraduate and graduate students in Public Health, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and related fields, students preparing for professional exams or thesis/dissertation work in health sciences, learners from diverse backgrounds, including first-generation college students or those returning to education after a break, and interdisciplinary learners from nursing, sociology, or education programs who require foundational knowledge in public health.
As a tutor, my approach is grounded in clarity, engagement, and adaptation to individual learning styles. I strive to create an environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and exploring concepts deeply. My primary goal is to foster not only academic success but also long-term comprehension and curiosity. I use a blend of evidence-based teaching methods that cater to various learning preferences. These include: questioning to promote critical thinking, scaffolded instruction that builds complexity gradually, active learning techniques like problem-solving tasks and group discussions, visual aids and real-life examples, especially for abstract or data-heavy topics, and formative assessments such as quizzes or reflective prompts to guide feedback and gauge understanding.
I often incorporate digital tools, such as interactive whiteboards or simulation software, to enrich the learning experience and make abstract concepts more tangible. My lessons usually start with reviewing the previous material to activate previous knowledge and build on it. I have clear objectives that are connected to build the required knowledge. I use the step-by-step competency building approach, lectures, visuals, and interactive techniques. I open floor for questions and reinforce key points many times during the lesson. Each lesson is tailored to the student’s pace and goals, and I regularly adjust plans based on real-time feedback and progress.
What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor
What distinguishes me is my ability to translate complex academic content into accessible, relatable language without oversimplifying it. With over three decades in academia and deep subject expertise, I bring a rich reservoir of real-world examples, case studies, and interdisciplinary insights. I also value the human connection—building trust, listening to students’ needs, and supporting them beyond the curriculum and the classroom when needed. Furthermore, my mentorship approach emphasizes academic confidence and skill-building, not just grades. I regularly help students develop better study habits, research skills, and even career planning.

I strongly recommend Dr. Rana as a biostatistics tutor. I had the opportunity to learn from her as a student in my Master of Public Health program and later work with her as a graduate assistant for two years. Through these experiences, I saw her ability to make statistics understandable, approachable, and less intimidating for students.
When I took her biostatistics course, I was returning to quantitative coursework after more than 20 years without a math or statistics class. Dr. Rana was able to explain complex statistical concepts clearly by breaking problems down step by step, demonstrating how formulas worked, and connecting statistical methods to real-world public health examples.
What stood out was her ability to explain not only how to complete an analysis, but why a particular approach was appropriate and how to determine which statistical test best answered a research question.
When I attended office hours, I would bring problems where I was unsure of my approach or had made mistakes. Rather than simply providing the answer, Dr. Rana asked questions about my thought process, helped identify where my reasoning needed adjustment, and guided me toward understanding the solution. This helped me develop confidence in my own ability to work through statistical problems.
Dr. Rana meets students where they are while helping them grow. She combines strong statistical knowledge with patience, clarity, and a teaching style that encourages students to think independently.
I believe she would be an excellent tutor for students at any level who want to better understand statistics and build confidence in their skills.I have had the privilege of working with Dr. Rana Jaber in multiple capacities at Northern Illinois University. She was my instructor for the Biostatistics course, where her clear teaching style and deep understanding of the subject greatly enhanced my learning experience. I later served as her Teaching Assistant for over a year, during which I observed her unwavering dedication to her students and commitment to academic excellence.
Currently, she is also serving as the co-chair of my thesis committee, and I continue to be impressed by her supportive nature, professionalism, and attentiveness. Dr. Jaber is not only incredibly knowledgeable, but also approachable, patient, and kind. She truly is a go-to professor for her students and goes above and beyond to ensure their success.
I highly recommend Dr. Jaber to the Superprof community. Her calm demeanor, willingness to help, and exceptional teaching skills make her an outstanding educator and mentor.View more recommendations
