About James
I’m James Cowland, an artist and art tutor for all ages. I would like to offer my peripatetic services as a tutor, supporting the faculty by supporting your studies in art on a 1:1 basis in order to help you up to the next level in your Artistic journey - from key stages one through five, through college and beyond. For enhanced technical and contextual understanding I can offer ongoing tutelage throughout term-time, and depending on your needs in the short-term I can offer sessions that help you expand and optimise your portfolio and artistic vocabulary in the run up to assessment. I studied Art and Design at Central Saint Martins before specialising in Fine Art at the University of Brighton. I’ve spent the last 8 years facilitating others in their Artistic journey, alongside my work as a career Artist. My teaching method was honed with adult learners at Blind Veterans UK where I found with adult learners that a process of pre-assessment, positive reinforcement, constructive critique and learner-led goal-setting improved confidence and encouraged them to take ownership of their intellectual investment in Art. It is a process that yields results all the more in children at the beginning of their learning curve, and a method that supports early career artists in finding their voice. My ultimate goal is to set a creative way of thinking in motion that is transferable across many careers and vocations. I take professional pride in helping others channel their passion for art, and helping them to develop and display their vision. I am recently DBS certified, Level 3 qualified in Education and Training and am local to Brighton and Hove. I would be glad to share details for former employers and parents of students who I have worked with recently who are eager to act as referees for the outcomes achieved with their children. “My first lesson with James he listened to what I needed help with. He advised me on where I need to start and gave me an idea of a plan for future lessons to help me with my college course.” Phoenix

Our initial lesson, a minimum of 1 hour, we can have a chat to decide if we are the right fit, to get to know one another a little too and to set some goals and a time frame in which to meet them. I find that 1 and a half hours per session provides the time adequate to start and finish a session with time to review and for questions. If we choose not to proceed, you will still leave with as much advice as I can fit into the time-frame! Depending on what you hope to achieve, we can then set about achieving short-term goals that build towards a long-term improvement. I like to make the process unique to you and your interests, that fits your own metric for success, or if you are studying, fits the criteria for success on your course. I can offer some strong and unique core technical skills that can be universally applied, and will make any drawing subject approachable for you. For example: Viewing a physical subject as though it were Abstracted Shapes. Using your imagination to create a 'scaffolding' construction that brings your drawing subject from a low-resolution set of shapes (polygons) and guidelines measured against one another, all the way to a high-resolution rendering that is accurate and recognisable. We use 'soft-eyes' to relieve ourselves of the burden of detail until they are strictly necessary, and we learn which details are necessary, and which are simply surplus to requirement. Indeed, if realism isn't important to your process, we can also look at the core principles of Abstraction, and help guide your Abstract Artwork up to the next level. Really, it's all about what YOU want to do, and helping you do THAT to a higher level. Aside from learning new technical skills, we will learn how to look at what we make with constructive critique - how to celebrate your successes in Drawing and Painting but still look for areas for improvement. A lot of learners fall into the trap of 'Perfectionism' but I strongly believe that perfectionism is a curse. Once we find a way to overcome it, confidence can bloom, and with confidence comes exponential improvement. I can also demonstrate Painting skills, teach you about the 'nuts and bolts' of a healthy painting practice, I can demonstrate canvas-stretching and priming, colour mixing, colour theory and identification.. I am equipped to answer almost anything you need to know, and if I'm not sure then I'll learn it for us in time for the next session! So, get in touch and start today. I'm looking forward to seeing what you already make, and talking about where to take it next.

Details
My standard hourly rate is valued at £22. Superprof takes their cut of that. Sessions in-person come at a slightly increased rate because physical demonstration in-the-real requires a slightly higher level of dynamism. I am not a driver, so travel times are dependent on public transport, and my travel expense is an average of bus or train fares around the county. This won't matter if we are meeting online.
