About Alexander
I am a fully qualified teacher of English with 7 years of teaching and tutoring experience that has taken me from secondary schools in the UK to some of the top British independent international schools in the world. I hold a BA English from Bristol University, as well as a PGCE from University of Wales, Trinity St David which I completed alongside the highly competitive Teach First Leadership Development Programme.
I have a proven track record of helping my students achieve top grades (A*/A) at both GCSE and AS/A levels, across a wide range of exam boards (such as Cambridge and Edexcel), as well as extensive experience helping my Key Stage 3 students achieve their goals. I have progressed quickly through my career to positions of responsibility and recently held the position of Head of English, which further strengthened my knowledge of the differing requirements of all the available exam boards. I am able to call on this experience and knowledge to empower my students by helping them understand exactly what is required of them no matter which exam board they are preparing for.

My approach to education is heavily focused on building strong relationships with my students, through which they feel supported, encouraged and challenged. Each student has preferences for different styles of learning, and different aspects of their study that they may find challenging. By recognising this individuality, I am able to adapt my teaching to best support each student, and provide them with a level of challenge that motivates rather than discouraging them.
I have extensive experience working with students who have additional learning needs. I have previously taught specialised SEN classes including students who had additional learning needs such as autism, Asperger's, ADHD and dyslexia. As well as these specialised classes, I have also taught a number of SEN students who have been integrated into mainstream classes. In addition, my time spent working in international schools has given me extensive experience teaching students for whom English is a second or additional language. In all such cases I adapt my teaching to suit the individual needs of each student, using research-guided teaching strategies that have been proven to help students with each particular need.
I firmly believe that there are no limits on the capabilities of any students - given the right support and attention, all students are capable of achieving top grades. I consider raising a student's expectations of themselves to be one of the most important and rewarding aspects of my role, and I work hard to help my students develop a growth mindset. Once we have established an aspirational and ambitious long term target to aim for, we focus on the individual steps needed to get there, and set a series of short-term targets to act as checkpoints along our journey. As each short term goal is achieved, we move on to the next one, and the next, until the student is able to achieve their long term goal. Students are often surprised at how quickly they make progress under this approach, as each smaller step feels manageable and achievable in comparison to their long term target grades which can sometimes feel out of reach or overwhelming.
Students I tutor will have access to expert knowledge and guidance regarding how to achieve their goals. They will be treated as an individual, and receive personalised feedback that empowers them to take ownership of their progress. They will learn independent learning skills that will benefit them in both their education and their future careers, and develop a growth mindset that gives them confidence to tackle any challenge they may face. They will develop an understanding of how to achieve top grades in their English assessments, and make consistent progress through challenging but enjoyable learning activities.
