Meryl Echeverry – Head Teacher
Monnow Primary School
I am a confident, caring, assertive and organised Teacher (future NQT) looking for a new opportunity to make a real difference into the lives of young learners. My main goal in life is to ensure young children are supported and encouraged to achieve their full potential. I am a complete ‘all-rounder’ and I can adapt to any situation, in particular to situations surrounding young learners and their educational environment.
Friends, family and teachers, all have said that I am a caring, empathetic, have great patience and have a great connection with children. It is for this reason why I have chosen the primary age group and is why I believe that I am a strong candidate for this job. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss my application in more detail in person.
Work History/Volunteering to date
PGCE Primary University of Swansea Trinity Saint David
September 2016 – July 2017.
Currently I am studying my PGCE in the University of Swansea Trinity Saint David. In this establishment I am required to teach in both the foundation phase and KS2 (in the first two placements). During the third placement I will choose an area to specify in. The fact that I will be planning, delivering, and be assessed in both the foundation phase and KS2 will allow me to be versatile in any classroom I am placed in. Furthermore I will also explore the theories behind pedagogy and how these theories have influenced the classroom.
I feel that it is important for the child to try and work out any problems themselves. If they become stuck, I assist them by hinting and giving clues to guide them to the correct answer. For example, if a child is struggling to pronounce a word, I encourage the child to sound the letters out individually (using their phonic knowledge) and then I encourage them to communicate the word again. After completing this exercise (99%) of the time the child will be able to pronounce the word successfully without need for assistance.
I feel my experience coaching football shares many similarities of the role of a teaching assistant. It was my role to help organise equipment, help young players in groups and on an individual basis to help improve their skills, give feedback to the manager on their progress and performance while ensuring all children are encouraged to participate and get involved which promotes self-esteem and independence. Coaching young people in football has improved my communication skills and confidence when talking to young children as I would have to give instruction in front of the whole group.
There are many transferable skills that I can take from my experience coaching in this age group. I would relish the opportunity to use my coaching skills and previous experiences to be able to assist your school in the additional lunch hour and afterschool sport classes
Writing essays and dissertations is an integral part of my degree which shows my competence with the English language along with my English A-level. Equations and calculations are also an essential part of my degree which requires a solid mathematical knowledge base. With Science being the spine of the course I am also confident in my scientific knowledge. ICT is becoming ever important in schools, I believe I have a credible background in this area as I have grown up with computers and use them during everyday life. My AS level and GCSE in ICT shows my competence in using different software packages especially Microsoft office.
