Second year Human Biology at Edge Hill University offering biology tuition from GCSE up to second year university level.

Methodology

My teaching method is based on giving students an understanding of concepts. Too often students are expected to remember facts which are quickly forgotten after an exam.
One thing that has benefited myself is getting to grips with a concept - starting basic and working up, ensuring every level of learning is properly understood. Successful homework tasks, and in-class tasks will be reflective of understanding. In addition, self-learning is very important. Whilst tutors and teachers alike are both necessary to facilitate learning, an element of engagement needs to come from the student.

Experience

I am an ambitious and personable individual with experience in several areas, particularly within a scientific setting. I achieved 10 A/A* at GCSE and went on to study Psychology, Philosophy, Maths and Biology at A-Level. As a second-year undergraduate BSc Human Biology student, my academic reading skills, digital skills, communication skills ie. group work and presentations, data handling (R studio) have all developed greatly. I am also confident in lab work including Microscopy, and Sterile Technique & Inoculating Plates. Outside of the lab, I am a course representative and faculty representative for my department and also work to achieve other qualifications. The balance of my children and work commitments have equipped me with determination to do well and this is hopefully reflected in my 70%+ grades and recognition within my department.

With my skill-set and scientific knowledge, I hope to inspire other young people to pursue studies within a biology background and equip them with all they need to know on how to be successful! I hope to encourage to students to explore the breadth biology has to offer, and appreciate all aspects of life.

Georgina's CV

I am an ambitious and personable individual with experience in several areas, particularly within a scientific setting. Whilst studying my undergraduate degree (BSc Biology) my academic reading skills, digital skills, communication skills ie. group work and presentations, data handling (R studio) have all developed greatly. I am confident in lab work including Microscopy, and Sterile Technique & Inoculating Plates. Outside of the lab, I am course representative and faculty representative for my department and have also been working towards a Competitive Edge Certificate. The balance of children and work commitments have equipped me with determination and fantastic time management skills, particularly within the current pandemic. Other work experience includes hospitality; I am bar and cocktail trained, and support work; I gained different training certificates.

Work Experience
Feb 2017 – Feb 2018/Aug 2019- Dec 2019 Support Worker, Green Heys (CIC), Waterloo and DoveHaven, Milbrook, Southport

In this role I cared for elderly residents with Alzheimer’s and dementia. Duties dealt with aspects of daily life from personal care and getting up in the morning, to help eating and just a friendly face to chat to. Each individual care plan had to be followed and routinely kept up to date to allow the correct and appropriate care and equipment to be used within their daily care routines.

Oct 2014 – Jun 2016 Bar associate, Hey Amigos Club and Alpine Club Lodge, Beach Bar, Wetherspoons, Southport
In this role I served customers drinks as well as providing table service. During my time at Alpine, I was fully cocktail trained. I practised effective cash handling and stock replenishment. Time management and good customer service skills were essential in order to maintain a good reputation. Alternating shift patterns were undertaken. Excellent maintenance, and cleanliness of the bar and customer areas were essential.

June 2013 - Aug 2017 Catering Assistant, Kemp Lodge CIC, Waterloo
In this role my duties were basic food preparation, maintaining cleanliness of the kitchen and dining area, assisting with patients feeds and re-ordering and replenishing stock. This role often involved working alone, requiring excellent time management skills and the ability to work well independently.

Outside interests:
As a sociable individual I am always keen to be out seeking new opportunities. At present I have gained a new interest in Ethnobotany and Plant Blindness with the aim to study this for my dissertation. Reading is a big interest of mine, both academically and for pleasure. Attending university has been a great opportunity in enabling me to attend research seminars and access resources to expand my knowledge outside of university broadening my future career opportunities. My children and I spend a lot of time outdoors in nature learning and enjoying our free time. Outside of university, I enjoy practicing mindfulness, meditation and yoga. It is important, for me, to keep a clear and positive mind enabling resilience.

Prior to having children, and university, I actively sought opportunities to expand my knowledge and partook in various opportunities in school and college. One example was going to Krakow, Poland to learn about the Holocaust to then disseminate my learnt knowledge across the high school and Sixth Form I attended. I gained 3 ASDAN credits for completing this. I also completed the NCS course in my first year of college, and raised over £1000 for a local charity.
