About Qawal

I am someone who absolutely LOVES music. I love being a musician, and I love to spread this joy of expression through music, Guitar specifically. I aspire to make everyone's journey to becoming a great musician as fun as I possibly can, but I give my word that you will get bored, frustrated, and overwhelmed sometimes too. Ultimately, I want to make it so that the only hindrance to your progress is YOU not putting the necessary time to your own growth. That means I will give you everything you need to grow while you are on your own time. I take accountability as much as I am expecting you to, but not more, and I take full accountability for my position as an instructor!

I had to learn the hard way: DO NOT throw a bunch of theory and exercises at someone and expect them to stay as enthusiastic about learning as when they first saw themselves being a musician. I have the tools to turn anyone willing to put in the work into a Great musician, but I was missing the one factor that makes you want to pick the Guitar up again the next day.. FUN!

Doesn't sound too important, right? Well, when I started simply helping people learn the music they want to learn, that love would stay, and the interest in the more complicated things would come to them naturally. Of course, I still teach the boring, difficult things.. that is the kind of teacher I am, but I show you how those things show up in the music that you know and love.

My lessons include:

Ear Training/Fretboard Mastery- Without ANY theory knowledge, you can play anything you want, as long as you know how translate those crazy musical ideas you have in your head and the ideas you hear from others to the fretboard. Getting familiar with individual notes and knowing where to find them on the guitar is a wonderful foundation for creating and transcribing music.

Theory - So you know when you play 'these three' notes together, you get 'this sound', or when you put your fingers 'here'.. 'this' happens, or when you play 'this' group of notes after 'that'.. you feel something.. That's awesome! But let us give those phenomena a name. That is essentially what theory is, not something that you HAVE to learn in order to be qualified to play things that are otherwise 'out of your league'. The ideas came first, the explanations came after.

Practical application/Improvisation - There is no point in knowing all of those things if you have no idea how to USE them. I would have said composition, but I am not 100% for the conventional structure of music. Instead, you will see how these ideas are used in music around the world, conventional and unconventional, from the past to the present and that may inspire you to decide how you want to go about structure. After all the brainy things, I like to unwind with a jam session to give you an opportunity to use what you learned in a real musical setting.

Whether you are a complete beginner, or you are an intermediate/advanced player who may need some refreshment, I am here for the anyone who wants to grow!
