About Mychal
While I prefer face-to-face interactions with tutees, I definitely understand our current climate. I am fully vaccinated and would urge anyone who contacts me for tutoring to be open-minded about meeting at a neutral territory to really get a full experience. After all, in the end, graphic design is FUN! It may not always be the case as a daily job, but I promise you we will have a great time nailing down your projects, and maybe you will teach me a few things I can pass on to others in the end. To best summarize myself I'd have to take a quote from an old mentor of mine that once described me as someone, "who likes to have fun but always shoots straight."
I've been helping and mentoring graphic designers for a number of years on and off. My job as a junior graphic designer at the University of Texas saw many interns come and go and it helped create a knack for teaching within a fun and safe environment. Flash forward 5 years and I'm a senior designer with new interns every semester getting them prepared as best I can with the real-world job they eventually get hired for.
My tutoring style is catered toward college student juniors and seniors on the verge of graduating and needing help with individual projects and assignments. I'm not one to hold your hand and your project will not become my project. Instead, you will receive real-world constructive criticism (i.e. yes that perfume box looks great, but legally you could never put this here, etc), and be shown guidance from the initial phasing of sketching and concepting, to the final mockup or photography shot.
I am a back-to-back two-time Product Of the Year award winner for branding and packaging (BuzzTallz and Uptown Cocktails), and as such, I focus my tutoring on these subjects. From thinking of creative logo ideas to how a package design would be perceived on a store shelf, I can help assist in and beyond these print categories.
TLDR; I'm always going to be honest with my students in terms of constructive criticism, but in the end they *will* come out a better branding designer.
