Like teaching anything, I think the key is to always explain why something must be done in a certain way rather than just how. This at least lays the foundation for a deep understanding of the subject, one that will be flexible with edge cases and changing standards. Beyond that it’s really the only way to make such an excess of new information stick, like teaching mathematics through proof rather than memorization. There’s a natural isomorphism there (given by the Curry–Howard correspondence if you’d like to get technical) since programming is literally a form of constructivist proof.
