My approach to teaching is for it to be the students asking the questions and the teachers guiding the students to make sure the right ones get asked. I believe that there is no wrong question, and that a student should not feel like getting things wrong is itself wrong. Getting things wrong is part of learning. I feel deeply that every student should be able to learn what they want to learn, how they want to learn it, and that everyone should see themselves both as a student and as a teacher. Unfortunately, our current education system does not let you learn at your own pace. So much is based on how well you do on tests that you can only do once. If you do poorly, tough luck, life just got a bit harder. When I teach, I provide support and encouragement until you feel you understood it. The way I know you understand the concepts is that you can apply them in new areas, not that you can spit them out again, word for word, or that you can pass a test. People who don't do well on standardized tests do not have standardized minds. Don't you think an employer would rather hire someone who has a portfolio of unique work then someone who got good grades? And maybe the student doesn't want to work for a big corporation but wants to start one of their own! I will teach that student how!
