About Melissa
Prior to graduating with my Arts BA in 2020, I worked with kids age 3-12 at a daycare, and also started volunteering at the reading and writing-based non-profit 826LA. I still work with 826LA whenever I have the chance, and through my volunteer work there, I've gained experience and training in helping students of all ages.
I have a love for reading and writing that dates back to my young childhood, when I started making my own books out of pieces of cardboard, computer paper, and glue. Aside from always focusing on English academically, I have a creative love for it, especially through prose, zines, and poetry.
I have all the knowledge to help handle most assignments and concepts a given English course might throw at a student, and additionally have an artistic inclination that I feel gives me a unique ability to motivate those I work with by showing them that reading and writing can be a lot more fun than they think!

I like to get to know each student individually and customize an approach that works best for their learning style. It's important to me that first and foremost, my students feel comfortable and know that when we're working and learning together, it's a judgement free zone.
I will typically get started in a session by going over any specific assignment or lesson a student is currently working on within school, but if that only takes up so much time or isn't applicable to their current situation, I always have various writing and reading exercises to utilize so we can work on strengthening whatever skills need general attending to.
I can work with a variety of ages, from early elementary school all the way to a senior in high school. Wherever a student is at both grade-wise and personally, I'm confident I can meet them where they are at, and get them where they want to go.
