University Student looking to help tutor dyslexic and non dyslexic students in English Literature

Methodology

I am looking to help other disabled students to understand and progress in their English lessons so they can gain the grades they need to go further. I am also open to working with non-dyslexic students but my method of teaching is geared towards helping with time management as well as ensuring the content of essays and assignments make sense and are well structured.

Experience

I am a high functioning dyslexic student with A levels and first year university experience of English Literature. I aim to help other dyslexic students to improve their skills in order to help with exams and GCSE's as someone who understands the disability and achieved excellent grades.

Emily's CV

I am an outgoing and friendly 19-year-old student Studying Education Psychology at the University of Lincoln. I am looking to tutor fellow dyslexic students in English Literature to support me during my studies at the University, therefore giving me an insight and experience in working with children in an educational environment. I am determined to learn what is best for the individual child and keen to gain vital skills that may help me throughout my life as well as preparing students for exams and future jobs. I have high functioning Dyslexia meaning I have an understanding of the disability while also being capable to spot mistakes and rectify them. This may benefit students with a similar learning disability as I can understand their struggles in a way no other tutor could while also helping them in a way I know for sure works. I am also very capable of tutoring students without disabilities as my content analysis is excellent.
I have previous experiences in assisting teaching, qualifications in English Literature, Journalism and an understanding of educational psychology as well as completing a course in Acting. These have taught me how to communicate effectively with children and young adults while also giving them a detailed education that compliments the school curriculum. I am very good at working with children due to my friendly and approachable nature as well as my experience working in a primary school. On top of this I grew up in an area with a lot of cultural diversity and as a result can speak to all members of the public with ease due to my wide knowledge of different cultures. As well as this my acting skills have taught me the ability of keeping children’s attention and focus making me ideal to tutor students with dyslexia. When acting I had to keep the attention of the audience and so I have gained skills easily transferable to working with students.

Skills
- Friendly and approachable
- Excellent communication skills
- People-orientated
- Honest and trustworthy
- Reliable and conscientious
- Good team player
- Willing to learn
- Ability to act in a professional manner
- Well-spoken and literate

Work history
{July 2014}
Teaching assistant at Bushmead Primary School / Bushmead road Luton.
This was a job that I found for two weeks of work experience organised by my school, in which I spent time with primary school children. I mainly worked with those of around nine years of age. I also had a chance to interact with members of staff as well as organising some activities and helping with problem solving. This experience taught me how to react quickly and efficiently when issues arose. I was frequently solving friendship problems between the children this helped me to understand how different people think and feel. Working here also taught me how to divide my time effectively to ensure the children were happy and I completed the work I was given.
{September 2014 – November 2016}
Facilities Service Assistant at Luton Sixth Form College / Bradgers Hill Road, Luton
I spent my first year of college working as an F.S.A. at Luton Sixth Form. This job mainly entailed keeping the college clean and tidy during the times in which the students were not around. Since this job took place in the evenings and meant I was largely on my own I felt that the job was not suited to my personal skills, such as the ability to interact well with people. I would prefer to be working somewhere I can speak to the public and use my friendly nature to its fullest extent. I did gain many skills from this job such as a knowledge of what is the correct product to use when cleaning as well as being trained in safeguarding due to the job taking place in an environment with children. I also received a DBS certificate from this job.
{December 2016- August 2017}
Retail Assistant at Homebase / Enterprise Way, Luton
During my time working at Homebase the company was undergoing a transition to different ownership, as a result the products we sold changed frequently meaning I had to pick up the information about new products quickly. I was also hired during a time when new staff was needed swiftly consequently meaning I had to learn to pick up skills such as how to mix paint and use the tills in a very short amount of time, I feel that I did this very well. This job also taught me to have patience with customers as well as developing my problem-solving skills. I spent some time on the desk despite not being fully trained in doing so as a result I had to use initiative to ensure the customers were happy and I was often praised by management for my customer service. I gained a knowledge of using the computer to check stock as well as improving my physical strength due to carrying the large and heavy products sold. I was trained in what to do in the event of a fire as well as health and safety in a retail environment. Overall this job gave me many skills to be used in a fast-paced work environment.

Other
I have been a keen member of Girl Guiding since I was five years old while also going on to become a leader, working with children and organising exciting and educational activities for them. This has allowed me to learn some valuable life skills, as well as giving me the opportunity to work with many people from different cultures and backgrounds. Similarly, I was a part of the Scouts for five years, giving me the opportunity to work with young people in the scouting community. Furthermore, this has allowed me to work as the leader of a team and so I have gained confidence when directing an activity or a group of people.
I am a very sociable person and enjoy going out and meeting new people. I Have a passion for music, films/tv and fashion. I enjoy doing my own makeup and I love wearing bright colours in my hair and clothes.
