Hi! My name is Clarissa and these days, I'm an academic researcher in chemistry. I have been an amateur player for 25 years and counting. Although I do not play professionally, I did previously teach beginners and intermediate students, aged between 5 - 65, in Sydney for 7 years (1999 - 2006). I also used to play for weddings and a tango band in Australia years ago, and nowadays a bit of Scottish fiddle and folk music, and occasional orchestral playing. The violin has always been in my life outside of work. I have attained Grade 8 Violin and Grade 5 Music Theory from The Australian Music Examination Board in 2006. My practical exams were generally awarded Distinction ("A" grade), except two were awarded Credit (B+).
As a violin student, I went through many different learning experiences with various teachers and as a result, have gained a lot of useful fundamental techniques that I am keen to share with beginners and intermediate students. Apart from that, I also read quite a bit on the different kinds of teaching methods and useful techniques shared by professional violinists from their masterclasses. Armed with those information and personal experiences, I am confident that I can guide beginners, who are keen to start learning the violin, with a good foundation without hurting themselves. If you're an intermediate student (Grade 3 to 5) wanting to improve your playing technique and posture, I can help, too. Teaching is also a great way to learn and explore new techniques and ideas - it's very much a two way street between the teacher and student.
I am detail and technique focused, as a solid foundation is the key to learning success and the best reward in a long run. I also respect student's opinion and feelings very much so I tend to ask them to describe those to me after the introduction of new techniques and ideas.
For beginners, I would strongly recommend 30-min lessons; 60mins for intermediate students. I will travel to you homes within the metropolitan areas of Edinburgh, either by public transports and/or on foot.
