I am a medical graduate with a passion for teaching science and maths. I am friendly, patient and have excellent communication skills.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach GCSE Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and A level Physics and maths.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
Tutoring Standards Agency - Professional Tutoring Certificate (Distinction)
Peninsula Medical School (2013) - Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery
Henley College (2007) - 4 A's in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths
- How much do you charge?
£40 per hour for all subjects. If the first lesson is unsatisfactory then I don't charge for it. This has never happened!
- Where do you teach?
I teach at my home, or I can cycle to students' homes within a 5 mile radius. I also teach online using skype and an interactive whiteboard which I think works as well as face to face tuition.
- When are you available?
Any day or evening apart from Saturday.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach from year 7 up to GCSE for Maths, Chemistry and Biology. I teach up to A level for Physics.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I use Skype to video chat with the student and to share my screen with them. I can then draw and write on an interactive whiteboard which the students can see in real time. I can also upload exam papers onto the whiteboard and annotate them, and work through them with the student. I find this as effective as face to face tuition and have had very positive feedback from online students.
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have been tutoring full time for the past 2 years. In that time I've helped many students through their exams, and often rekindled enthusiam for science and maths in the process. I usually boost students by 2-3 grades, and the best result this year was helping a student from D to an A in physics A level.
Working in medicine has given me the opportunity to communicate in a wide range of pressured and challenging scenarios with diverse individuals. Subsequently I've developed the ability to quickly build rapport with people who are often anxious, stressed or demotivated. This gives me the confidence to connect with a student, communicate effectively and provide motivation when required.
I gained a lot of experience while teaching junior colleagues at medical school and as a foundation doctor. The enjoyment and positive feedback I had from this was the main reason I transitioned from medicine to a tutoring career.
