I think the main question for your students is what kind of motivation they have to study English. If they are only learning it as requirement for a test or to enter university, you have quite an uphill battle since their motivation is only instrumental. It also depends upon their ages. Older students may feel that their English is "good enough" so they may see no need to study hard to progress
