About Nivitha

I’m Nivitha, a mum living in Redhill, and maths has always been my subject. I studied Computer Science Engineering, and the part I enjoyed most was the problem-solving: taking something that looks complicated and breaking it into steps that make sense.

That’s what I love about teaching too. After college I ran tuition classes, and I was always the friend people came to when maths wasn’t clicking, including my engineering classmates before their exams. Seeing someone go from “I can’t do this” to “oh, that’s all it is” never gets old.

This year I took my own son through the 11+, so I know how much pressure families feel, and how confusing the process can be. I started tutoring to help other local families through it with clear advice and calm, patient teaching.

Away from maths, I love cooking and gardening. I used to run a cooking YouTube channel, which grew to 70,000 followers, and these days you’ll find me at my allotment in Redhill or looking after the many plants at home. Both have taught me the same thing teaching does: good results come from patience and small steps done well.

I’m honest with parents, encouraging with children, and I believe most maths difficulties come down to a missing step, not a lack of ability.

Who the lessons are for: children in Years 3 to 6, for the 11+ (maths, verbal and non-verbal reasoning) and KS2 maths, including Year 6 SATs. I mainly prepare families aiming for the Sutton and Kent grammar schools, but lessons suit any child who wants to feel confident in maths.

How I teach: every child starts with a free 45-minute assessment. I watch how they work, not just whether the answer is right: what they do when stuck, whether a method is understood or just remembered, and where confidence runs out. You get a written report within two days, with the three things I’d work on first.

Lessons then focus on those priorities. I explain each idea step by step, the child talks me through their thinking out loud, and we practise until the method is secure. Then we build speed with timed questions, because the 11+ rewards working fast without careless mistakes. Reasoning questions are taught as patterns and logic rather than tricks, so children can handle question types they haven’t seen before.

Each lesson ends with short practice for home, usually 10 to 15 minutes a day, and I keep parents updated on progress.

Lesson length: one-to-one lessons are 1 hour, at my home in Redhill or online. Small Saturday groups of up to four run for 2 hours.

My background: I studied Computer Science Engineering and ran tuition classes after college, including helping my engineering classmates through their maths exams. My son sat his 11+ this September, so I know the process from the parent’s side as well as the teacher’s.

Details

Free first session: every child starts with a free 45-minute assessment. You get a written report within two days covering where your child is now, what I’d work on first, and an honest view of the schools you have in mind for 11+ grammar. There’s no obligation to book anything afterwards.

One-to-one lessons: £40 an hour, at my home in Redhill or online. Most families book four sessions at a time (£160), paid in advance. If you’d like to book a full term, it’s twelve sessions for the price of eleven.

Small Saturday groups (up to four children): 2-hour sessions at £44 each, which works out at £22 an hour. Booked four sessions at a time (£176), paid in advance.

Included in the price: all teaching materials, practice papers and home practice sheets. There are no extra charges.
