About Joel
I am a Berklee College of Music graduate with a degree in songwriting and over 10 years of experience teaching music. I am the guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter for my band, Thirsting Altar, and play bass in Old Machines, bringing real-world performance and songwriting expertise into my lessons. My teaching approach is personalized, engaging, and practical, focusing on both technique and musical creativity. Whether you’re a beginner learning your first chords, an intermediate player looking to refine your skills, or a songwriter aiming to bring your ideas to life, I tailor lessons to your individual goals and musical interests. Beyond music, I enjoy reading, weightlifting, and playing frisbee with my pitbull, Wagu. My goal is to help students not just play guitar, but truly connect with their instrument and express themselves through music.

My Approach as a Guitar Teacher
Teaching Method and Techniques
My teaching philosophy is based on hands-on learning, creativity, and personalization. Playing the guitar should be both fun and structured, so I tailor lessons to each student’s skill level, musical interests, and goals.
I incorporate a mix of:
• Fundamentals & Technique – Proper hand positioning, picking, fretting, and strumming patterns.
• Music Theory – Scales, chords, progressions, and how they apply to real music.
• Song-Based Learning – Teaching techniques and theory through songs the student enjoys.
• Ear Training & Improvisation – Developing musical intuition and creativity.
• Practice Strategies – Effective exercises to improve speed, accuracy, and muscle memory.
A Typical Lesson
A lesson usually begins with warm-up exercises to build finger strength and dexterity. We then focus on a specific skill, such as chord transitions, strumming patterns, or lead techniques, applying them to a song or musical piece. Depending on the student’s goals, we might explore improvisation, songwriting, or music theory. Each session ends with a recap, practice tips, and setting goals for the next lesson.
What Sets Me Apart as a Guitar Tutor
• Customized Learning Plans – Lessons are tailored to each student’s genre preferences, skill level, and goals.
• Practical & Engaging Approach – Rather than just drills, I integrate real songs and jam sessions.
• Emphasis on Musicality – I teach students not just how to play, but how to express themselves musically.
• Balanced Focus – A combination of structured technique and creative improvisation helps students become well-rounded musicians.
• Encouragement & Motivation – I make learning enjoyable and help students stay inspired through progress tracking and personalized challenges.
Who the Lessons Are For
• Beginners – Learning the basics of chords, strumming, and simple songs.
• Intermediate Players – Improving technique, learning new styles, and developing soloing skills.
• Aspiring Songwriters – Using the guitar as a tool for composition and self-expression.
• Musicians Wanting to Expand Skills – Fingerstyle, blues, rock, jazz, or improvisation techniques.
Whether you’re picking up a guitar for the first time or looking to take your playing to the next level, my goal is to help you play with confidence and joy.
