About Matt
I have degree in Ecology from the University of Sheffield and a PhD in Complexity Sciences from the University of Bristol, where I applied mathematical and computational methods to biological systems including cancer, diabetes, and rare disease. I have tutored biology at A-level through a UK tutoring agency and have spent over a decade working at the intersection of biology, data science, and medicine.
I'm a patient tutor who takes the time to understand where each student is starting from. Biology rewards curiosity, and I enjoy helping students find that curiosity — particularly in the areas that initially seem dry or abstract.

My biology lessons focus on building a solid understanding of the subject from the ground up — the kind that makes exam questions feel manageable rather than unpredictable. I work with GCSE and A-level students across all major UK exam boards, covering core biology through to the more demanding topics that students often find hardest.
My background is in biological and ecological sciences — I have a research degree in Ecology from the University of Sheffield and a PhD that drew heavily on mathematical modelling of biological systems, including cancer, metabolic disease, and neuromuscular conditions. Biology has been central to my professional life as well as my academic one.
Sessions are typically one hour, online, and I adapt the pace and approach to each student. Some prefer working through past paper questions; others need the conceptual foundations to make sense before anything else. I'm comfortable with both.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
I had the opportunity to be a student of Matt from 2016 to 2019, and I strongly recommend him as a teacher.
Matt creates a supportive and comfortable learning environment that makes you feel confident expressing your ideas and actively participating in discussions. His classes go beyond traditional language learning, often incorporating topics such as Biology and Artificial Intelligence, making each session both engaging and intellectually stimulating.
He consistently demonstrated a genuine commitment to my progress, offering optional assignments and providing thorough, thoughtful feedback that helped me improve steadily. His kindness, politeness, and ability to connect with students make him not only an excellent teacher but also a great mentor.
I highly recommend Matt to anyone looking for a dedicated, engaging, and forward-thinking educator.I had the pleasure of working with Matt as my supervisor during my MSc project in Health Data Science at the University of Exeter. Under his guidance, I developed a demand and capacity planning model for NHS endoscopy services, which involved understanding a complex real-world care pathway, engaging with non-technical stakeholders such as clinicians and operational managers, and implementing an ordinary differential equation model in Python.
Throughout the project, Matt was an excellent tutor and mentor. He was able to explain complex analytical and mathematical concepts clearly while also encouraging me to think independently. When I encountered problems regarding the equation construction and model parameter tuning, Matt always replied promptly and helped me develop my own solutions. His supervision helped me build confidence in approaching an unfamiliar multidisciplinary problem and translating analytical methods into work with practical value for healthcare services.
Overall, I would highly recommend Matt to students or professionals looking for thoughtful, patient, and technically knowledgeable tutoring, particularly in data science, biomedical and healthcare analytics, and applied quantitative projects.Matt was a supervisor to my master's project at the University of Exeter in 2023. At the time, the essence of the project was completely new to me, there were many aspects I have had to learn from scratch in order to get a grip on it. Luckily, Matt was the exact type of mentor and manager I needed to navigate in the time of uncertainty. He was passionate about his job, genuinely knew how to listen and support, held deep expertise in the subject matter, organized work effectively and conveniently for everyone involved. If you are considering Matt for a particular position, or simply looking to get to know him better, I can wholeheartedly recommend him.
