From the year of experience tutoring college students in biochemistry and with an international tutoring certification, I learned that the key to successful tutoring is from forming a strong connection with my tutee. I would first engage my tutee in their skill level in whatever subject they need help in, get background information on their class and how they like to learn. From here, I would want to help them with their work from their instructor’s - to make sure they fully understand fundamental class content. Next, I would review lectures, notes, or any class content that I see gaps in from helping the tutee with their work. Lastly, I would design practice problems tailored to the tutee’s specific learning style to fill in any remaining issues I see from the previous steps. The key in all of this is engaging and communicating with my tutee at every step, making sure they understand everything and going at their pace. I want to keep them engaged and keep learning fun! This lesson plan is applicable for all courses, I have experience in tutoring both middle school and college students in biology, molecular biology, cell biology, genetics, chemistry, biochemistry, writing (essays specifically), calculus, pre-calculus, and other life sciences - but this plan can be applied to many subjects!
