About Patrick
- What kind of experience do you have?
Although I am specifically offering tutelage in ceramics, my creative practice has evolved through a range of processes over the past 25 years including digital embroidery, applique, assemblage, digital c-type printmaking, digital screen based works using Photoshop and Illustrator, metalwork, pyrography and biotissue fixation. Ive exhibited my work and worked as Artist in Residence at museums and galleries internationally and have devised and delivered events and Masterclasses at venues including the Victoria & Albert Museum, The Lowry, The Science Museum, National Maritime Museum, National Army Museum, The Wellcome Collection and the Museum of Arts and Design New York. My work is also collected by a number of national collections. I also guest lecture regularly at a number of universities across the UK including King's College London, London College of Fashion, Central St Martins, Leeds College of Art, Manchester Metropolitan University and others. I have also successfully applied for and received funding from The Wellcome Trust and Arts Council England on a number of occasions.

- Where and with whom did you train?
I attained a BA Hons Degree and a Masters Degree in Ceramics with Distinction at University of Wales Institute Cardiff (UWIC) between 1990-93 and 1997-98 respectively.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
I currently guest lecture at universities across the country, speaking frankly about pursuing a professional career in the creative industries, as an artist and as a designer. I regularly return to many of these institutions every 2 years to address the new cohort of students. I find it incredibly rewarding sharing the kinds of experiences working as a professional artist and designer which can only be learned through years of professional activity.

I am a artist/designer with 25 years of professional practice in visual arts, ceramics and fashion accessory. My practice is diverse and I emphasise versatility and an open mind to exploring new materials, techniques and processes.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I deliver a range of short courses in ceramic, pottery and plaster mould making technique.
My courses usually run over evenings and weekends from my London Bridge studio for a maximum of 4 students per course but daytime weekday bookings can also be accommodated.
Subjects include:
Coil building
Slab Building
Hump/Slump Mould Making
Single and multi part press mould making
Slip cast mould making
Fettling and finishing
Glazing and firing
Pottery Throwing taster sessions:
Learning to throw is as much about observing technique as it is practicing your own. These sessions are designed to accommodate two students alternating on the wheel on a timed basis allowing for observation, and wheel time for the students to practice technique. Should you wish to book this session as an individual rather than a pair, please contact me directly first.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

This Centre of Excellence in Ceramics has an international reputation for pushing the boundaries of contemporary ceramics. Since qualifying my practice has evolved and transitioned through working with a wide range of materials and processes which were dictated by the themes and core concerns of my practice.
- How much do you charge?
The short courses I run vary in price depending on duration.
Currently a weekend two day course (12 hours) runs from 11am-5pm at £160 per student with all materials and firings included.
These courses run and cycle frequently and will either run for a Sat/Sun weekend or as a two-Saturday or a two-Sunday course.
Weekday evening courses can be arranged on request.

Learning to throw on a potters wheel:
2.5 Hour session - £55 for 2 people (you and a friend/family member)
These short sessions are designed to introduce you to the basics of throwing on a potters wheel and to give you wheel time to decide whether you wish to commit to signing up to a formal course. Many leisure courses in pottery tend to have long waiting lists and taster sessions are infrequent and usually group oriented. My taster sessions will satisfy your curiosity as to wether you wish to pursue this particular skill further and book more sessions and wheeltime with me or a tutor closer to home.
- Where do you teach?
Due to the nature of the equipment and materials required for the tuition I'm offering, all tuition is delivered from my London Bridge studio which is a 5 minute walk from London Bridge Underground/Overground station.
- When are you available?
Bookings can be very flexible though I run set courses over weekends and throwing taster sessions weekday evenings.

My tuition is aimed specifically at University students and Adult learners. I do not accommodate students of school age. Proof of age may be requested.

My tuition is specifically geared towards attaining skills and an understanding of material, process and technique.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
As an artist or designer, never feel shackled to one process, one subject or one discipline. Be open to new ways of working, new materials, processes and collaborations and above all, make the people who support and commission your work feel like a valued integral part of your creativity. Above all, do not expect success to come knocking. Do your research, work hard, let your prospective client base know you exist and operate as a professional with grace and humility.
