About Jay

My name is Jing Tao, but I go by Jay. I was raised in Asia up until high school and later came to the United States to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering. Since then, I've taken up opportunities to spread knowledge as both a volunteer and peer tutor logging a total of over 500 hours. From college peer-facilitated workshops to private tutoring, my longest students were with me for nearly 2 years. What drives me to continue tutoring is my passion for teaching and being able to help my tutees succeed. I hope to be given the opportunity to do so for you as well!

With 4 years of experience in tutoring high school and college students, I've worked with people of all educational backgrounds and study habits.

My goal is to translate to you the ability to think logically and critically, like an engineer. And at the same time, I aspire to help you find a passion for what you're learning. You will not only gain a better understanding of the subject matter but also pick up the "skill to learn", rather than just rote memorization.

I can also provide homework help, useful resources, handouts, personally-written notes, and exercises that I find helpful.

If your subject/course is not listed, feel free to reach out.

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

Contrary to many, Chemical Engineering wasn't always on my radar. However, I was captivated by the allure of tackling complex challenges and devising innovative solutions inherent in such a career path. Taking a leap of faith, I never looked back. Much like chemical engineers unravel intricacies in processes and systems, tutors aid students in surmounting academic hurdles, fostering problem-solving skills, and furnishing tailored solutions.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

Undoubtedly, mathematics reigns as my favorite subject. Despite its reputation for rigidity or monotony, I discern profound parallels between mathematics and our daily lives. Mathematics instills the ethos of resilience; oftentimes, the denouement isn't immediately apparent, necessitating various approaches to the initial problem, akin to navigating our futures. Nonetheless, I relish the intricate nuances inherent in other sciences such as Physics and Chemistry.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Mark Rober, a distinguished former NASA engineer, seamlessly transitioned his engineering fervor into education through his online platform. I aspire to emulate his feat, bridging the gap between engineering and education to inspire others to approach problems with an engineer's ingenuity.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Adaptability, empathy, and the capacity to motivate and inspire beyond mere tutoring sessions are paramount qualities that distinguish an exceptional tutor from an ordinary one.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

A resonating quote from my elementary school teacher continues to reverberate within me: "Mathematics and learning in general is ironically all about failing." It's this mantra that fuels my passion for teaching the subject.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

I've encountered challenges, such as engaging disinterested or resistant students. Stimulating and motivating them requires ingenuity and patience. Additionally, addressing knowledge gaps is a hurdle, given that students often arrive with gaps in foundational understanding, necessitating meticulous remediation while covering new material.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Teaching, for me, is profoundly fulfilling, especially witnessing students flourish both academically and personally. Witnessing them apply acquired knowledge beyond the confines of the curriculum evokes a sense of pride and fulfillment.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof?

I consider myself a Superprof because my students invariably depart each session imbued with renewed hope and motivation to confront forthcoming challenges. My objective transcends mere comprehension of the subject matter; I endeavor to instill in them the ability to apply knowledge innovatively and expansively, ensuring their holistic growth. Of course, I still ensure that my students can adequately understand the material they need to do well in their subjects/classes.
