I always try to suit my lessons to the individual student, first identifying his or her strong points and those that need improvement. Solving many problems & doing plenty of exercises is helpful, but never to the point when it just gets boring. I prefer to be flexible, to make sure the student really understands the issue, rather than just repeating the same old thing. Individually suited course, learning in a relaxed atmosphere & a student-first — not teacher-first approach are what counts towards a good lesson and a success in school.
Throughout secondary school, I was known for helping my classmates with (mainly) maths and chemistry, sometimes offering just bits of academic advice, and sometimes giving real lessons. Although I never treated it as an actual job, those people found it valuable & often expressed their satisfaction with their own coursework & performance at exams. Besides, I greatly enjoyed teaching and came to realise how important it is to treat each student individually, something that is often missing in a 25-people class.
