About David

I have played the guitar since 1979 and soon after learning I regularly taught my fellow students at school.

I went on to study guitar with Prof. Charles Ramirez at the Royal College of Music, where I also studied Composition (as one of only a handful of joint-first study students).

I subsequently completed postgraduate study in Composition at the Cracow Academy, The University of Oxford, and again at the RCM.

I also play the Renaissance lute, the mandolin and ukulele and am happy teaching any of these instruments also, plus music theory, counterpoint, orchestration, etc. from beginner up to degree level.

Alongside my teaching practice I have a career as a composer represented by a major publisher.

About the lesson

I am a highly experienced and enthusiastic teacher of guitar, mandolin, and ukulele, and can also teach music theory. I can prepare students for ABRSM or the Trinity grade exams.

Over my three decades of teaching I have taught students from age 4 to those in their mid-60s.

I am the author of the well-known teaching book 'Play Classical Guitar' which went into three editions including Spanish translation.

Each student requires a slightly different approach according to how they learn naturally and I work with this to ensure each lesson is satisfying for them and keep up their enthusiasm.

I suggest a 30 minute lesson to start to see how it all works and then if the student is enjoying it I can then go up to 45 or 60 minutes as needed.

30 minutes: £25
45 minutes: £37
60 minutes: £50

Plus travel costs: £12 across London, less in SE London.
