About Tyler Allen
I am a professional writing instructor, published poet, and experienced tutor with over a decade of teaching across academic, creative, and professional contexts. I hold an MFA in Creative Writing and Literature from Stony Brook University, where I studied poetry at an advanced level and developed a deep foundation in craft, critical reading, and revision. Since then, I have taught at institutions including Stevens Institute of Technology, Suffolk County Community College, and Stony Brook University, working with students ranging from middle school through PhD programs, as well as faculty and working professionals.
My work centers on helping writers at every stage of the process—from generating ideas and forming strong theses to refining language, structure, and voice. I have extensive experience supporting a wide range of writing: academic essays, research papers, dissertations, creative writing (poetry, fiction, nonfiction), and professional materials such as resumes, cover letters, and business communications. I am also well-versed in major citation styles, including MLA, APA, Chicago, and IEEE, and I tailor my guidance to the specific expectations of each discipline.
In addition to my teaching, I am an active writer and editor, with poems published in respected literary journals and experience reviewing and editing manuscripts for publication. This dual perspective, as both an instructor and a working writer, allows me to offer practical, up-to-date insight into both the craft and the expectations of contemporary writing.
Students who work with me can expect professionalism, careful attention, and clear, constructive feedback. I take pride in being reliable, prepared, and responsive, and I approach every session with the goal of helping you not only improve a single piece of writing, but become a more confident, capable writer overall.

My approach as a tutor is grounded in collaboration, clarity, and adaptability. With extensive experience working one-on-one with undergraduate and graduate students—as well as faculty—I meet writers where they are and help them move deliberately toward stronger, more confident work. Rather than simply correcting, I focus on teaching: breaking down complex writing tasks into manageable steps, modeling strategies, and asking targeted questions that help students develop their own critical instincts. I work equally across academic, professional, and creative writing, helping students refine analytical arguments, craft compelling narratives, and develop a distinct, intentional voice. Whether shaping a research paper or a poem, I emphasize both structure and texture—how writing moves, sounds, and means.
A typical lesson begins with identifying the student’s immediate goal—whether that’s refining a thesis, strengthening a narrative, organizing ideas, or revising a draft. From there, we work through a focused portion of the text together, addressing higher-order concerns like argument, development, imagery, and clarity before moving to sentence-level refinement. In creative work, this may include attention to form, voice, lineation, and image; in academic and professional contexts, it may involve structure, evidence, and style. I provide strategies students can reuse independently, such as outlining techniques, revision frameworks, generative prompts, and methods for integrating sources and citations (MLA, APA, Chicago, IEEE). Sessions are interactive and practical, leaving students with both a stronger draft and a clearer sense of process.
What sets me apart is the breadth of my experience and my ability to teach across contexts without flattening their differences. I’ve designed and taught college-level writing courses, led creative writing workshops, and worked extensively in writing centers with students at every level. This allows me to shift fluidly between helping a student develop a research argument and helping another sharpen the language of a poem or story, always with close attention to craft.
My lessons are ideal for high school students preparing for college, undergraduates across all majors, graduate students working on advanced research or creative theses, and professionals seeking to improve workplace communication or pursue creative projects. Whether you’re building foundational skills or refining advanced work, I offer structured, attentive support designed to make you a more capable and independent writer in any genre.

I set my hourly rate to reflect both my experience and the level of support I provide. I hold an MFA in Creative Writing and have spent years teaching at the college level, working one-on-one with undergraduate and graduate students, as well as professionals and faculty. Because of this, I’m able to offer more than surface-level editing—I help students understand how writing works, from developing ideas and structuring arguments to refining voice and style across academic, professional, and creative contexts. My sessions are tailored, focused, and interactive, and I bring the same level of attention and preparation to each one that I bring to my own teaching. Students aren’t just paying for a single session, they’re gaining tools and strategies they can apply independently in future work. I aim to provide clear, practical guidance that leads to real, lasting improvement, which is why my rate reflects both the depth of my experience and the quality of instruction I offer.
