About Ron
I have 20 years experience teaching programming at the high school / middle school levels. Through my methodologies, my students develop a thorough understanding of the programming concepts covered and how to apply those concepts to given problems. In general, I prefer to allow students to proceed at the pace that they feel comfortable with to ensure that they gain confidence in their programming ability.
Over my 20 years teaching APCS, the majority (> 70 %) of my students scored a 5 on the APCS exam which is much higher than the national average of approximately 25%.

My teaching methodology is to focus on developing algorithmic thinking without focusing on a particular language.
A typical lesson would incorporate the following elements:
1) Given a certain problem, how would you develop a solution for it?
2) Given your solution to the problem, how would you translate that solution into a computer program?
3) Once you have written your program, how would you debug it to get it to work correctly?
These three elements form a necessary cycle in order to complete a working program.
Students can work at their own pace until they feel comfortable with programming and can demonstrate proficiency in each programming topic covered.
Lessons are tailored to the level of programming ability and the student's age. A grade 5 student with no programming experience would start with developing simple games while a grade 12 student wishing to do APCS would program mathematical problems based on the APCS curriculum.
