About Helen
Helen Calcutt is a dance artist, choreographer and award-winning poet. She is the author of three volumes of poetry, and Artistic Director of Beyond Words Dance Theatre.
She has choreographed/directed, co-created, & performed for organisations including The Birmingham Royal Ballet, Vamos Cuba, Apple, Sonia Sabri Company, Autin DT, Shelley Eva Haden (She Swims), Akeim Toussaint Buck (Okan R&D), and the Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony (22′).
HELEN’S new poetry collection , ‘Feeling All the Kills’ is published with Pavilion Press. Her pamphlet ‘Somehow’ (Verve Press, 2020) was a PBS Winter Bulletin Pamphlet, and Poetry School Book of the Year. Her anthology, ‘Eighty-Four’ (Verve Press, 2019) was a Saboteur Award shortlist, and a Poetry Wales Book of the Year. Her poem ‘Rope’ was made into a short film by Paul Stringer.
HELEN was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Letters by Loughborough University in 2023.
Her cross-arts dance adaptation of Max Porter’s novel, ‘Grief Is the Thing with Feathers’ is being funded by Arts Council England and supported by the Birmingham REP, The Arena Theatre, and One Dance U.K.

I look forward to hearing from you!I like my writing sessions to be relaxed, nourishing and safe, where all students can grow in confidence, and learn to actually *enjoy* writing, as well as establish the skills they need! With over a decade's experience teaching writing across the U.K. and internationally, I have a great deal of resources and tools to help you improve your writing abilities - whether this is adding more flavour to your creative work, getting to grips with sentences structure and grammar, or very simple things like gaining more confidence in your spelling! I’m here to guide and assist you, whatever level you’re working at.
I work for Writing West Midlands, Writing East Midlands, N.A.W.E. Poetry International, The Poetry Society, The Poetry School, Birmingham University, Loughborough University, BCU, and many others. I was awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters in December 2023 from Loughborough University for my commitment to work in Creative Writing and Social Inclusivity.
I am also a qualified Creative Practitioner, a BA (Hons) graduate of Creative & Professional Writing, and a recipient of an Honorary Doctor of Letters from Loughborough University (2023) for my outstanding commitment to Creative Writing and work in Social Inclusivity.
