About Stella

In my saxophone teaching practice, I combine disciplined technical training with nurturing each student’s artistic voice, knowing that true musicianship comes from both precision and passion. I focus on foundational skills such as breath management, embouchure flexibility, finger dexterity, and rhythmic accuracy, ensuring that students can play with control and expression. Intonation and articulation are emphasized to cultivate clarity and emotion in performance. Improvisation is integral to my lessons, starting with guided exercises and gradually expanding to encourage students’ spontaneous musical creativity. I teach music theory contextually, making connections between scales, chords, and harmonic progressions and the music students engage with, which fosters deeper understanding and application. Repertoire is chosen collaboratively, reflecting students’ interests and exposing them to a variety of styles—jazz, pop, classical, and more—ensuring lessons are engaging and motivating. Goal setting is personalized and ongoing, helping students focus their efforts and celebrate milestones. One memorable teaching experience involved mentoring a shy student who, through consistent technical and improvisational work, gained the confidence to perform original solos at school concerts. This transformation epitomizes the journey I aim to facilitate: developing saxophonists who are both technically skilled and creatively fearless, capable of expressing themselves fully through their instrument.

My saxophone teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that every student can become a skilled musician when provided with personalized, patient guidance and meaningful challenges. I view the instrument as a tool for self-expression and communication, so my lessons emphasize developing a clear, beautiful tone alongside technical fluency. I begin each student’s journey by focusing on posture, breathing techniques, embouchure formation, and finger coordination, ensuring a healthy approach that will support years of playing.

Music theory is integrated naturally through repertoire and improvisation exercises so that students understand the “why” behind what they play, enhancing both comprehension and creativity. I strongly believe that enjoyment and engagement are critical to sustained progress, so I select music that aligns with the student’s tastes—whether that’s jazz standards, pop songs, classical melodies, or blues riffs. I encourage improvisation early on as a means to build confidence and musical intuition, supported by scales, patterns, and ear training.

Technology tools such as recording devices, tuning apps, and metronomes are incorporated to provide immediate feedback and to develop critical listening skills. Performance experience is a priority; I regularly organize informal recitals and encourage students to participate in ensembles or open mic nights to cultivate stage presence and musical dialogue. One particularly rewarding experience was mentoring a student who initially lacked confidence and struggled with timing;

through incremental goals, consistent practice, and performance coaching, they blossomed into a poised soloist and bandleader.
Beyond teaching notes and rhythms, I aim to inspire a lifelong passion for music, nurturing students to become expressive, thoughtful, and resilient musicians who enjoy their creative journey.
