I am a course complete English Ph.D. student at SUNY Binghamton, with an MA from Sarah Lawrence College. I have taught English and Writing for over a decade. I have taught college classes, SAT and ACT prep, and younger students.

For general English and Writing, I use a mix of two approaches when teaching: expressivism and constructivism. I use the expressivist approach to relate writing exercises and outside materials directly to the students’ lives. I then wade into the social constructivist approach. Under this approach, the students are exposed to various sources of information and must conceptualize the purpose and role of communication and why and how it becomes successful.
For SAT and ACT, I teach students books I've purchased as well as book taken from libraries. Each lesson is broken down according to topic (i.e. colons and dashes, implicit meaning, cause and effect, etc.). Students read the explanations at the beginning of each lesson. This is followed by my own explanation. Afterward, students do practice exercises, I ask what answer they got and tell them to redo any that are incorrect. Students then try to correct their answers. Finally, we take time out to discuss any questions. A timed practice exam is given at the beginning and about every 6 weeks thereafter.
