About Jake
I started teaching as a way to travel the world but have gradually found myself more and more in love with the craft. I find the work fulfilling and it's taken me to a lot of interesting places:
- ESoL at South and City College Birmingham.
- KS2 in public schools in Vietnam.
- Resource creation and learner-find in India at Learner Engagement Training Services Ldt.
- Public Services, up to BTEC Level 3, at Sandwell College.
- The last 12 months have been spent specialising my online tuition as colleges and schools closed.
I pride myself on my ability to empower students and make them feel completely prepared for their next step, whatever that may be.

My lessons have a clear context from start to finish, they are cohesive. My teaching has been described as energetic and engaging. They are planned from scratch with authentic, relevant materials.
Technical lessons usually begin with some kind of information processing, e.g. a reading comprehension, a video, a presentation or a research task. Students will then be encouraged to comment on/discuss the source material, their comments will get progressively more multifaceted, allowing them to demonstrate a deeper understanding of the topic. Often, this will culminate to a more ambitious project such as a report, presentation, news bulletin etc.
Creative lessons follow a similar structure, but with poetry, film, or literature. Literacy is developed at every stage of the lesson, regardless of the topic.
I also do exam-focused lessons that will develop exam technique in the least monotonous way possible; breaking down the techniques to their fundamentals, and practicing these skills within interesting contexts.
My lessons are between one hour and ninety minutes long. They suit learners between KS1 and KS3 or ESOL students of any ability.
