About Boris

My name's Boris, and I'm a friendly, experienced tutor looking to work with both English and Russian speakers across London! Having just graduated with a First Class degree in history from the University of Cambridge, I'm looking forward to offering tuition in history and other humanities.

In addition to over 65 hours of one-on-one tutoring experience, both in-person and on online platforms, I have two years of experience as a classroom assistant with IntoUniversity, where I worked with students of all levels, from Primary to Year 13. I also worked as a Student Ambassador for Selwyn College, at the University of Cambridge and spent much of the summer in 2020 working as an in-person tutor in North London. I have also mentored and worked with Year 8 students in their transition from primary school to the competitive environment of a selective London school, in my role as Prefect. I am an understanding and focused teacher and I have always found that the best results are achieved by combining organisation and discipline with students' own passions and natural curiosities.

Tutoring is a job that offers the chance to understand subjects in a new light, requiring me to be able to simplify and explain my own knowledge, testing the depth of my own understanding in the process. Coupled with the fact that every lesson offers and a new and unique task and challenge, this is why I've consistently pursued work in tuition.

Every lesson is tailored to the specific needs and preferences of every student, I generally begin working with students by consolidating their content knowledge, guiding discussions to promote an understanding of key underlying themes. Subsequently, I prompt and help them to apply this knowledge practically, crafting 'model' answers and essay plans in order to teach argumentative and analytical techniques. By doing so, I seek not only to improve students' results, but to grow their actual understanding of their subjects and to help endow them with the skills they need to succeed and grow on their own. By contextualising their work and explaining why it matters, I hope to kindle a genuine interest in students; that they might pursue their studies out of interest, and not just necessity.

When I'm not tutoring or enjoying the sights in London, I'm continuing my research into early modern history as I prepare to embark on an MPhil in the autumn, and getting ready for another term on the rugby pitch!
