About Carlos

Hello! I'm Carlos Valladares, a mathematics tutor with more than 18 years of teaching and tutoring experience. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics and have worked with students from elementary school through college, helping them strengthen their skills, improve their grades, prepare for exams, and become more confident in math.

I can help with Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Precalculus, Calculus I–III, AP Calculus, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Probability and Statistics, as well as SAT, ACT, GRE, and other math-related test preparation.

Today, tutoring is what I do full-time. My approach is patient, clear, and highly personalized. I don't want students to simply memorize formulas or procedures—I want them to understand why they work and feel confident applying them independently. If one explanation doesn't make sense, I'll approach the idea another way and adapt the lesson to the student's pace and learning style.

My interest in teaching began while I was studying Mathematics at the Central University of Venezuela, when classmates often came to me for help with difficult topics. I quickly realized that I genuinely enjoyed finding different ways to explain a concept until it finally clicked. After completing my Bachelor's degree, I continued with graduate-level studies in Mathematics and gained experience teaching at the university level. I later earned a Master's degree in Video Game Design, a field that also relies heavily on mathematics, logic, and problem-solving.

Lessons are available in English or Spanish, and I can also teach bilingually when that helps a student understand a concept more naturally.

Whether you're trying to catch up, prepare for an advanced course, improve a grade, or simply become more comfortable with math, I'd be happy to help. We can use the free 30-minute consultation to discuss your goals and determine the best way to move forward.

Every student is different, so I tailor each session to the student's current level, goals, and learning style. Whether you need help with a difficult topic, exam preparation, catching up in class, or building a stronger foundation, we'll focus on what will help you make the most progress.

We begin with a free 30-minute consultation to discuss what you're studying, identify any areas of difficulty, and determine the best approach moving forward. For younger students, parents are welcome to participate.

During a typical lesson, I'll explain concepts step by step, work through examples with you, and then give you opportunities to solve problems independently. My goal is not just to help you get the right answer, but to make sure you understand why the method works and feel confident applying it on your own.

If one explanation doesn't click, we'll try another. I can use diagrams, graphs, examples, practice problems, and different approaches depending on how you learn best. I also adjust the pace and difficulty as we go.

After each session, I provide a PDF containing the work we completed so you can review the explanations and examples later. For ongoing students, we can track progress and adjust our plan as their needs change. When helpful, I can also recommend practice problems or topics to review between sessions.

Sessions can be used for regular weekly support, test preparation, homework and assignment support, catching up after falling behind, or preparing ahead for a future course.

If you're looking for patient, personalized support and a clearer understanding of the math you're working on, I'd be happy to help.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My interest in mathematics really grew while I was studying for my Bachelor's degree in Mathematics. I became fascinated not only with solving problems, but with understanding why things worked and how different mathematical ideas were connected.

Tutoring started very naturally for me. While I was in college, classmates would often ask me for help with topics they were struggling with. I realized that I really enjoyed explaining things and, especially, seeing that moment when something that seemed confusing suddenly clicked for someone.

What started as simply helping classmates gradually became something much more important in my life. I discovered that I genuinely enjoyed teaching and helping people feel more confident with mathematics. I have now been tutoring since around 2008, and it has become a major part of my professional life.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less)

I teach mathematics at many different levels, from Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry to Precalculus, Calculus, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Probability, and Statistics. I also work with students preparing for exams such as the SAT, ACT, and GRE.

What I enjoy most is helping students understand the reasoning behind the math instead of just memorizing a formula. I especially enjoy Calculus, Probability, and Algebra because there are so many opportunities to connect ideas and look at the same problem in different ways.

I also like working with topics that students find intimidating at first. It is very satisfying to take something that looks complicated and slowly break it down until the student realizes that it is actually manageable.

If I had to choose something I enjoy a little less, it would probably be very repetitive calculations where there is not much reasoning involved. Even then, I usually try to find patterns or connections that make the work more meaningful.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I have had several teachers and professors who influenced the way I think about teaching.

The ones I remember most were not necessarily the ones who knew the most mathematics, but the ones who knew how to make difficult ideas feel approachable. They encouraged questions, took the time to explain why something worked, and never made students feel uncomfortable for not understanding something right away.

That had a big influence on me. I learned that knowing the subject is only part of being a good teacher. You also need patience, good communication, and the ability to make students feel comfortable enough to ask questions and make mistakes.

That is something I try to bring into my own tutoring sessions today.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

For me, one of the most important qualities is patience. Every student learns differently, and sometimes a concept needs to be explained more than once or in a completely different way before it makes sense.

A good tutor also needs to listen carefully. Sometimes a student asks for help with one problem, but the real difficulty comes from something they learned months or even years earlier. Being able to recognize that makes a huge difference.

Adaptability is also very important. The same explanation will not work for every student, so you have to be willing to change the pace, examples, or level of detail depending on the person in front of you.

Ultimately, I think the goal of tutoring should be to help students become more independent. I want students to reach the point where they can work through problems confidently on their own.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

One experience that has always stayed with me involved a student who needed to pass a mathematics exam in New York to continue pursuing her goal of becoming a teacher.

She had already taken the exam several times without passing, so by the time we started working together, she was understandably frustrated and had lost a lot of confidence in her math abilities.

We worked together for several months. Instead of simply doing endless practice questions, we tried to understand exactly where the difficulties were coming from, rebuilt the necessary foundations, and worked step by step until she became much more comfortable with the material.

Eventually, she took the exam again, and this time she passed.

She was incredibly happy, and seeing her reaction was one of those moments that reminded me why I enjoy tutoring so much. What made it even more special was that, after overcoming something that had once felt like such a major obstacle, she told me that she might even consider teaching mathematics herself someday.

That really stayed with me. She had gone from feeling defeated by math to imagining herself teaching it to someone else. For me, that is a perfect example of how tutoring can sometimes change much more than just a test score; it can completely change the way someone sees their own abilities.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

One of the biggest challenges I faced was when mathematics became much more abstract at the university level.

Earlier in my education, a lot of math was about learning techniques and using them to solve problems. Later, especially in more advanced and proof-based courses, that changed completely. I had to learn to work much more carefully with definitions, abstract ideas, and logical arguments.

That transition was difficult at first, but it ended up being one of the most valuable parts of my education. It taught me that struggling with mathematics is completely normal, especially when you are moving into a new level of thinking.

It also taught me to slow down when I do not understand something, go back to the definitions, and build the reasoning carefully instead of immediately looking for a formula.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Teaching is definitely one of my biggest passions. I really enjoy taking something that seems complicated and helping someone reach the point where it finally makes sense.

I am also very passionate about video game development. That interest eventually led me to earn a Master's degree in Video Game Design.

What I enjoy about game development is that it combines creativity with logic, programming, design, problem-solving, and mathematics. In that sense, it actually has a lot in common with what I enjoy about math.

Both involve looking at a complicated problem, breaking it into smaller pieces, trying different approaches, and slowly building a solution.

It has also made me appreciate even more how mathematics appears in so many places outside of the classroom.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P)?

I think a big part of it is experience. I have been tutoring mathematics since around 2008, so I have worked with students of many different ages, levels, personalities, and goals.

Over the years, I have learned that no two students are exactly the same. Some students need help rebuilding their foundations, others need support with a very advanced course, and others mainly need someone who can explain things in a way that finally makes sense to them.

I have also been fortunate to work with some students and families for several years. I really value those long-term relationships because I get to see students grow, move from one course to the next, and become more confident and independent.

I can teach a wide range of mathematics, from foundational topics to advanced college courses and standardized test preparation, and I can work with students in both English and Spanish.

More than anything, though, I genuinely care about the students I work with. I want them to feel that our sessions are useful, that they are making real progress, and that mathematics is something they are capable of understanding.
